Senior Archaeologist

This position serves as the Wyoming Military Department's Senior Archaeologist, primarily operating out of Camp Guernsey and reports to the Cultural Resources Manager (CRM). The primary duty of this position is to manage day-to-day prehistoric and historic operations at Camp Guernsey to ensure agency compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (54 U.S.C SS : 36 CFR Part 800). Conducts archaeological fieldwork and report writing, to include survey, testing, site recordation and excavation as needed.

Provides direction and management to seasonal staff, contracted and partnered field crews and provides training and coordination with Camp Guernsey staff and the public to further the agency's mission and goals. Assists the CRM with consultations and coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office, Tribal Historic Preservation Offices, various Federal and State agencies, and public stakeholders in accordance with 36 CFR Part 800.

• Coordinates with the CRM to prioritize and implement archaeological fieldwork on Camp Guernsey to support the Agency's Mission.
• Independently manages day-to-day cultural resource-related fieldwork and projects at Camp Guernsey and related logistics.
• Independently arrange for supplies, tools, equipment, and access; conduct archaeological surveys, site testing and/or excavations, field visits, assessments, and monitoring as needed for WYMD projects.
• Conduct library and archival research and analysis: using complex analysis and current scientific methods, analyze fieldwork data and write technical reports.
• Supervise seasonal AWECs: oversee the fieldwork of archaeological and historic contractors and consultants; review consultant reports and data; update appropriate WYMD databases; provide regular updates to the CRM on progress and issues.
• Implement the Site Protection Measures program at Camp Guernsey.
• Maintain protective measures including toppers, stakes, GPS/GIS documentation, and preparation of work orders.
• Update and maintain documentation, photos, GPS/GIS, maps, and notes of sites annually and report any issues to the CRM.
• Conduct troop support, monitoring, and education.
• Conduct military unit field exercise coordination; assist range operations in placing units outside of environmental restriction areas.
• Monitor and report damage to cultural sites resulting from training.
• Provide Inadvertent Discovery Plan Briefing to contractors.
• Assist in the development of the budget for the purchase of equipment and materials, production of toppers and recruitment of seasonal employees.
• Assist with outreach efforts to include the preparation of project scoping materials for WYMD Camp Guernsey projects which involve outside governmental agencies including SHPO, the Bureau of Land Management, and Native American Tribes.

Preference will be given to a candidate holding a Master's Degree.

• Two years of demonstrated experience conducting archaeological fieldwork as a field crew chief including recording sites, site testing and excavation, field supervision and writing technical reports/site forms/documents; GPS use; GIS use;
  Off-Road driving,
• Knowledge of military training impacts on cultural resources.

Education: Bachelor's Degree (typically in Archaeology)

Experience: 1-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Archaeology) with acquired knowledge at the level of an Archaeologist I

Education & Experience Substitution: 4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Archaeology) with acquired knowledge at the level of an Archaeologist I
