Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides Ameri Corps service and career internship opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. Stewards, in partnership with the NPS GIS office, is hosting a cohort of GIS stewards.

This position is in the Yellowstone Center for Resources division, which houses the park’s natural and cultural resources work groups. Service will be mostly office-based, with some field opportunities. The position will be based out of the park headquarters in Mammoth Hot Springs, WY, at an elevation of 6300 feet. Gardiner, MT is five miles north (North Entrance to Yellowstone National Park).

Livingston, MT is about 60 miles away and Bozeman, MT about 85 miles from Gardiner. Field work may involve mountain weather conditions and wildlife; winter conditions with cold and snow are expected.

Description of Duties:

The GIS program in Yellowstone provides geospatial support for programs within the Yellowstone Center for Resources (Vegetation, Physical Sciences, Wildlife, and other resource management programs). The GIS Support Steward will help manage and improve spatial data, develop data collection systems using ArcGIS Pro, Field Maps, and Survey
123, and use ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro to integrate new data into current data management systems. Responsibilities include creating and maintaining Experience Builder and Dashboard web applications for data viewing, editing, and analysis, and using these tools to improve data management workflows. The Steward may use ArcGIS Server to work with versioned enterprise geodatabases and may assist with maintaining air quality and sound monitoring stations throughout Yellowstone.

• United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident
• Applicants must be between ages 18-30, or up to 35 for veterans, under Public Land Corps Act of 1993
• Has a high school diploma or equivalent; or agrees to obtain one prior to using the education award
• Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check

Advanced GIS knowledge and skills. Experience using ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Microsoft Office. Experience creating, editing, and populating GIS databases. Understanding of spatial and non-spatial databases. Cartographic skills are desirable.

Applicants who have obtained or are pursuing a GIS degree or certificate and/or have GIS experience are preferred. A federal government security background clearance will be required prior to starting.
