Key Responsibilities

In order to maintain institutional safety standards, the position requires the following:

  • Enforcement of rules and regulations.
  • Responding to post orders on various assigned posts.
  • Modeling appropriate, pre‑social behavior.
  • Supervising inmates in the performance of various jobs; modeling appropriate, pre‑social behavior.
  • Assisting in a variety of searches, including checking for contraband items.
  • Observing daily inmate living, programming, work areas, and the perimeter fence line; reporting security violations.
  • Conducting daily scheduled counts of inmates.
  • Assuming duties of housing control centers, central control centers, and inmate living areas that monitor inmate movements.
  • Becoming familiar with inmate names and characteristics for easier identification of inmate movements and infractions.
  • Assisting in restraining unruly inmates, utilizing the minimum amount of force required.
  • Assisting in transporting inmates within and off institution boundaries, including inter‑ and intra‑state predetermined destinations.
  • Assisting in processing newly incarcerated inmates or the processing of released inmates.
  • Attending required training to perform duties at an acceptable level.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must not have a felony or domestic violence conviction.
  • Must complete an initial training period and be awarded Correctional Officer Certification by the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Commission within one year of initial appointment.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 0–1 year of progressive work experience in a correctional setting.
Physical & Pre‑Employment Requirements
  • Must successfully pass a background/reference check, medical and psychological evaluation, physical fitness exam, urinalysis drug screen, and other pre‑employment testing.
  • Must have ability to work overtime as required and to work on any shift, holidays, and weekends.
  • Drug‑free workplace; all staff are subject to drug testing while employed.
  • Tobacco‑free workplace; prohibits smoking materials, smokeless tobacco, or tobacco substitutes on or into WDOC facilities and grounds.
  • Strict dress code policy covering facial hair, body art, and piercings/gauges.
