Job Summary
Under the oversight of the Plant Supervisor, the Combination Services Technician performs functions that align with the Data Services Tech. This includes installation and maintenance of telecommunications services, cabling, customer premise equipment (CPE), field equipment and terminals. Responsibilities extend to troubleshooting, isolating, and performing the necessary repairs on defective equipment in the network. The technician also installs, assists with, and maintains IT services, battery testing, carrier systems, and non‑regulated equipment.
They locate underground cable plant and utilities in a timely manner, coordinate with other departments on service installations and updates, and document project‑related forms for all installations and repairs rendered. The role monitors alarm systems, maintains equipment, and communicates updates, changes, or problems to key contacts and impacted customers. A scheduled on‑call rotation/emergency response during evenings and weekends is required.
Work‑related travel is expected as necessary.
The Combination Services Technician provisions equipment for service orders and troubleshoots subscriber systems. They perform advanced troubleshooting and administer repairs on a variety of components including switching, transmission, alarm network equipment, wireless systems, standby generators, fiber equipment, voice frequency repeaters, loop extenders, and cable loading systems. The role also coordinates servicing of remote building repairs (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and building/site maintenance services).
EssentialDuties, Responsibilities and Expectations
- Install and transfer services: perform installation of new services for voice, data, special circuits, ethernet, and other non‑regulated services offered by Range.
- Review staking sheets or maps to install services designed by Network Engineer.
- Perform work with appropriate tools/hardware to meet applicable codes and safety requirements.
- Installation and maintenance of services: voice, broadband, special circuits, ethernet, and other customer premise services provided by Range.
- Cabling: install, repair, and maintain copper or fiber cables in aerial or buried applications and terminate cables using industry standard techniques.
- Install subscriber carrier systems, including digital, analog, and next‑generation carrier systems.
- Ability to work aloft.
- Configure network interface devices.
- Install DC power plant and associated cabling systems.
- Install batteries and/or battery banks in data centers, communications huts, and remote cabinets.
- Operate network devices such as modems, routers, and wireless devices.
- Assist Managed Services with site surveys, installation, and troubleshooting repairs.
- Repair and maintain equipment: perform repairs on defective buried cables, excavate existing copper or fiber cables, locate telecommunication facilities, and establish safety precautions for digging.
- Repair aerial cable using ladders or bucket trucks and set up safety precautions as needed.
- Coordinate with technical personnel to diagnose and locate defective equipment; read and interpret cable schematics; ensure repairs restore network stability.
- Repair access/transport carrier systems and other department equipment using specialized test equipment.
- Utilize copper and fiber testing equipment to analyze and identify areas needing upgrades or repairs.
- Battery testing and maintenance in data centers, communication shelters, and remote carrier systems.
- Perform basic building maintenance and repairs to include HVAC systems and generators; coordinate with professional contractors for repairs beyond technical ability.
- Data Center equipment assignments include switching, fiber, transmission, transport, alarm network, broadband equipment, ethernet, special circuits, standby generators, voice repeaters, loop extenders, power board (DC), and cable loading systems in compliance with company standards.
