The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a full-time Heavy Mechanic to join our team in Basin, Wyoming. Under direct supervision, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic will perform a variety of maintenance and repair tasks on heavy‑duty vehicles and equipment. This includes working on both diesel and gasoline engines, as well as critical mechanical systems that support WYDOT’s operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on heavy‑duty equipment and vehicles
  • Assist with diesel and gasoline engine overhauls and tune‑ups
  • Repair and maintain brake, steering, and transmission systems
  • Service and troubleshoot hydraulic systems
  • Conduct inspections to ensure equipment operates safely and efficiently
  • Follow all safety procedures and maintenance standards
Qualifications (Preferred)
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical systems and equipment maintenance
  • Interest in heavy equipment repair and diesel technology
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to learn

This position is based in Basin, Wyoming, a historic community established in 1896 as a center of rich agricultural development. Known today as the “Lilac City,” Basin is located in the heart of the Bighorn Basin and near the Bighorn Mountains. Essential Functions
  • Conduct a wide variety of preventive maintenance and/or repairs on various diesel and automotive equipment, along with other self‑propelled or towed equipment.
  • Perform safety inspections on all types of automotive and diesel equipment.
  • Read and interpret technical manuals to diagnose and correct problems with vehicles and equipment.
  • Rig and fabricate new equipment to district standards.
  • Create repair orders.
  • Be responsible for the inventory of the shop, equipment, and supplies.
  • Design and fabricate parts for tractors, mowers, and machinery for specialized applications.
Preferences / Agency Requirements
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have completed any equipment certification exams.
  • Welder Certification card for FH&V Fillet and FH&V Grove 3/4" welds is a plus.
  • Agency requires the successful applicant to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Must pass a series of seven fundamental tests, including Electricity, Engines, Hydraulics, Power Trains, Administrative Procedures, Rigging, and General Shop.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of automotive maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of electronic principles and diagnostic tools.
  • Knowledge of light and heavy‑duty automotive equipment and its parts (i.e., hydraulics, hydrostatics, drive trains, gas, and diesel engine overhauls).
  • Knowledge of grease and oil specifications.
  • Knowledge of general servicing of equipment.
  • Knowledge of policies and safe work procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education & Experience:

    2–4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics) or, alternatively, an Associate’s Degree and 0–2 years of progressive work experience.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
    Ability to obtain and maintain a CDL.
