Skilled Trades Specialist

The Wyoming Department of Corrections (WDOC), Wyoming Women's Center (WWC), is seeking a Skilled Trades Specialist to join our team in Lusk, Wyoming. This position is an integral part of the facility's operations and is responsible for performing a variety of general trades, preventive maintenance, repairs, and upkeep throughout the institution and surrounding property. Working under the supervision of the Skilled Trades Manager, the Skilled Trades Specialist helps ensure the safety, security, and functionality of the facility by maintaining building systems, equipment, security cameras, electronic systems, and door-locking mechanisms.

The ideal candidate is self-motivated, able to work independently, takes initiative, and possesses excellent time management and prioritization skills.

As part of the Wyoming Department of Corrections, you will play a vital role in supporting public safety through the safe, secure, and humane management of offenders while helping provide opportunities for successful reintegration into society. Established in 1981, the Wyoming Women's Center serves as the primary education and treatment center for female inmates within the WDOC system. The facility provides programming, vocational opportunities, recreational activities, and educational services designed to support the WDOC mission of reducing recidivism through cognitive and behavioral intervention.

As a Skilled Trades Specialist, you will contribute directly to this mission by maintaining a safe, secure, and well-functioning environment for staff, inmates, and visitors. This is a full-time position with benefits, scheduled at 40 hours per week.

Essential functions include:

  • Responsible for electrical duties including: replacing light bulbs and ballasts, repairing or replacing switches, controls, dialers, and other electrical components, troubleshooting and locating problems, maintaining/operating emergency generators, and recommending design parameters of new service.
  • Performs locksmith duties from ordinary office door locks to extremely sophisticated electronically operated high-security magnetic locks.
  • Accomplishes the vast majority of troubleshooting, repair, remodeling, design, and construction of state facility maintenance; prepares bid specifications and determines the most cost-effective method of accomplishing repairs and projects.
  • Responsible for the upkeep of all vehicles, tractors, utility vehicles, heavy equipment, diesel generators, and other mechanical systems.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains heating systems, gas systems, refrigeration systems, boiler systems, and air handling units.
  • Assists with lawn care, landscaping, and snow removal.
  • Responsible for the water and sewer service (pump stations, sewer lift stations, automated fire sprinkler systems, irrigation systems, etc.) for state facilities.
  • Reviews engineering plans and specifications related to: electrical distribution systems, mechanical utility systems, sewage treatment and disposal systems, construction, alteration, rehabilitation, and modernization, for compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Reads and interprets mechanical, topographical, and electrical schematic drawings and maintenance manuals used in maintaining and repairing electronic equipment.
  • Conducts inspections at facilities, which include developing an inspection schedule and timelines to ensure the system complies with federal, local, and environmental standards.
  • Participates in the construction/energy management planning process and checks existing facilities/utilities and completion of the scope of work for proposed projects.
  • Plans, tracks/schedules, and performs preventive maintenance for all ranges and courses, including all electronic and mechanical targetry systems and mechanical pneumatic equipment.
  • May work with and escort vendors and contractors to complete various tasks and assignments.
