GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

If so, join Wyoming State Parks and Historic Sites for adventure and teamwork in the Absaroka District, located in Northeast Wyoming between the Big Horn Mountains and Devil’s Tower.

This position creates and implements interpretation for Absaroka District sites, designs and executes educational programs, administers the volunteer program, and organizes special events. These duties achieve the department's goals by providing enjoyable and interpretive experiences for visitors while also preserving our cultural and natural resources so the unit can be sustained at the highest possible level. The Absaroka District consists of the following staffed sites:
Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site, Trail End State Historic Site, and Keyhole State Park, where the position will be based, as well as several unstaffed satellite sites. Housing will be provided at Keyhole State Park.

Essential Functions
  • Interpretation for Absaroka District Sites:
    Create and implement novel and impactful interpretive programs, activities, special events, and outreach programs for all demographics of visitors.
  • Run social media channels for district sites, including Facebook, Instagram, and You Tube.
  • Train volunteers and staff in our guided tour program.
  • Obtain and maintain NAI Certified Interpretive Guide status, implementing techniques from the training.
  • Work with people of all backgrounds and walks of life, including children, family groups, and adult audiences as well as historically underrepresented groups.
  • Effectively communicate verbally and in writing; establish and maintain working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Network with other museums and cultural organizations to collaborate on interpretation, outreach, and special events. Interact with patrons by working at the front desk, answering questions, and listening to feedback.
  • Special Events:
    Coordinate and/or assist with special events and submit required paperwork. Organize volunteers to help run the events. Promote events via the website and local media.
  • Interpretive Personnel:
    Assist with interviewing prospective applicants for open interpretive positions and making hiring recommendations. Discuss and resolve problems regarding processes and work methods. Provide site-related training to staff and volunteers.
  • Fiscal Management for District 5 Interpretation:
    Follow budget parameters; monitor unit budgets to avoid overspending. Coordinate with volunteer groups and fundraising activities; identify funding opportunities and apply for grants when appropriate. Assist in the design and distribution of brochures and signage.
Preferences

Preference may be given to applicants with a bachelor s degree in Cultural Resources, Natural Resources, or Communications plus at least two years of experience working in interpretation and programming, narrative design, research and interpretation. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with big-picture ideas and a passion for innovative programming.
