- Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently
- Assists with training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipment
- Under limited supervision, flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices
- Operates heavy equipment including single and tandem-axle trucks, auger trucks, aerial lift equipment, and equipment for removing snow and ice from the roadway surface
- Responsible for the rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and/or traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings
- Responsible for general maintenance of highway-related facilities such as rest areas, including water and wastewater treatment per EPA and DEQ requirements
- Attends and completes all required state and federal training to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills
- Communicates information to update others’ status and/or process effectiveness
- Utilizes computers for agency practices, such as training and performance evaluations, and keeps up to date on technological advances with specialized equipment
- Performs duties involved in removing snow and ice from roadways; determines effectiveness of treatments and may adjust treatment when necessary
- Adheres to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including correct use of personal protective equipment
- Preference may be given to applicants who have a current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements before employment
- Ability to obtain a Certification to operate specified equipment
- Ability to obtain a Certificate of completion of Defensive Driving
- Ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification
- Ability to obtain a Flagger certification
- State highway pavement marking and signing standards
- State and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures
- Equipment maintenance and repair procedures
- Hazardous materials response procedures
- Federal and state requirements for the proper use of personal protective equipment
- Basic operation of single and tandem-axle trucks, loaders, and tractors
- Safe work procedures, First Aid and CPR, OSHA safety data sheets for chemicals used in maintenance activities
- Basic office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephones
- Education and Experience:
2-4 years of relative work experience in highway maintenance or construction; or Associate’s Degree (typically in Engineering) and 0-1 year of relative experience - Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within twelve months of hire
- Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools
- Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment
- Frequent exposure to hazardous materials
- Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently
- Ability to stand or sit and operate equipment for long periods
- Work in adverse environmental conditions, including rain, snow, heat, and hail
