GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Highway Maintenance Technician in Sundance, Wyoming. This role performs a variety of maintenance duties under limited supervision, ensuring safety, quality, and efficiency of Wyoming’s transportation system. The position contributes directly to maintaining the state’s infrastructure and providing safe travel for all.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and provides training to others. Provides work direction to Highway Maintenance Assistant employees.
  • Flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices under limited supervision.
  • Operates single and tandem‑axle trucks, equipped with auger, aerial lift or snow removal equipment.
  • Responsible for rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and traffic control devices such as signs and highway striping.
  • Maintains equipment and facilities, including water and wastewater treatment.
  • Installs and maintains weather stations, snow‑supporting structures, and automated road closure gates.
  • Makes daily weather and snowpack observations.
  • Attends and completes all required training to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills.
  • Communicates information to update others on work status and process effectiveness.
  • Utilizes special computerized equipment.
  • Performs duties involved in removing snow and ice from roadways.
  • Adheres to all safety standards, policies, and procedures, including correct use of all associated personal protective equipment.
  • Conducts maintenance tasks including fencing, patching, mowing, delineating, signing, and sweeping.
PREFERENCES
  • Possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements.
  • Ability to obtain water certifications if necessary.
  • Ability to obtain certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT.
  • Ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion of Defensive Driving.
  • Ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Ability to obtain a Flagger certification.
KNOWLEDGE
  • State highway maintenance and construction standards
  • State highway pavement marking and signing standards
  • Specifications, standard plans, policies and procedures, rules, regulations, and traffic control standards
  • Equipment maintenance and repair procedures
  • Hazardous materials response procedures
  • Federal and State requirements for proper use of personal protective equipment
  • Basic equipment operation for single and tandem‑axle trucks, loaders, and tractors
  • First Aid and CPR, Material Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used
  • Office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephones
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education:

    Associate’s Degree (typically in Engineering) or 2‑4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Highway Maintenance Assistant.
  • Experience:

    0–1 year of experience for Associate level; 2‑4 years for experience only qualification.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
    Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Availability for emergency work calls anytime, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools.
