Overview

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Highway Maintenance Technician in Burgess Junction, Wyoming. In this role you will perform a variety of maintenance duties under limited supervision, ensuring the safety, quality, and efficiency of Wyoming’s transportation system. The position contributes directly to maintaining the state’s infrastructure and providing safe travel for all.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently; trains staff in equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Provides work direction to Highway Maintenance Assistant employees; under limited supervision flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices.
  • Operates single and tandem‑axle trucks equipped with augers, aerial lifts, plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice.
  • Responsible for rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and traffic control devices such as signs and highway striping.
  • Maintains equipment and facilities, including water and wastewater treatment.
  • Installs and maintains weather stations, snow‑supporting structures, and automated road closure gates.
  • Makes daily weather and snowpack observations.
  • Attends and completes all required training to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills.
  • Communicates information to update others on work status and/or process effectiveness.
  • Utilizes special computerized equipment to support operations.
  • Performs duties involved in removing snow and ice from roadways.
  • Adheres to all safety standards, policies, and procedures, including the correct use of personal protective equipment.
  • Performs maintenance tasks such as fencing, patching, mowing, delineating, signing, and sweeping.
Qualifications & Preferences
  • Must have a current Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements.
  • Ability to obtain water certifications if necessary.
  • Ability to obtain a Certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT.
  • Ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion of Defensive Driving.
  • Ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Ability to obtain a Flagger certification.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with the above certifications and endorsements.
Knowledge
  • State highway maintenance, construction, pavement marking, and signing standards.
  • Specifications, standard plans, policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and traffic control standards.
  • Equipment maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Hazardous materials response procedures.
  • Federal and state requirements for personal protective equipment.
  • Basic operation of single and tandem‑axle trucks, loaders, and tractors.
  • First Aid, CPR, and material safety data sheets for chemicals.
  • Use of office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephones.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 2–4 years of progressive work experience in highway maintenance or construction with knowledge at the level of a Highway Maintenance Assistant.
  • Associate’s Degree in Engineering (or related field) acceptable in lieu of experience. If degree is not held, 0–1 year of progressive experience may be considered.
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
Physical Working Conditions
  • Available for emergency work calls anytime, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools.
  • Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous materials.
  • Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently.
  • Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods.
  • Work in adverse environmental conditions (rain, snow, heat, hail).
  • Ability to walk long periods on even and uneven ground.
  • Working around high‑speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.

  • FLSA:
    Non‑Exempt.
  • WYDOT will conduct motor vehicle record checks to verify a valid driver’s license.
  • Pre‑employment drug screening and/or physical required.
  • Random drug and alcohol testing required.
  • Occasional overnight travel may be required.
  • Must report to the department shop within 30 minutes of receiving a call.
