Position: Highway Maintenance Specialist & Snow Plow Operator 2026-01494
Location: Wamsutter

Overview

This position offers a $2,000 hiring bonus (see Notes for eligibility) and housing will be provided.

Essential Functions
  • Safely operate and train others to operate complex machinery in specialized maintenance applications.
  • Lead the performance of daily maintenance tasks as assigned by the Highway Maintenance Supervisor I; provide regular work direction to the crew.
  • Assist with tracking inventory, material usage, labor, and equipment mileage in the supervisor’s absence.
  • Provide advice and assistance on repair procedures needed for highways, equipment, and buildings; make recommendations regarding unplanned maintenance activities.
  • Serve as a technical resource for the crew; identify and correct any maintenance activity not performed according to state and federal safety and/or quality standards.
  • Communicate project issues to the supervisor; propose new actions to keep projects moving forward.
  • Provide input to the supervisor regarding crew performance issues and observed successes.
  • Operate heavy equipment, including single and tandem axle trucks, plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice.
  • Responsible for rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and traffic control devices; oversee on‑road traffic control operations, including safety procedures and quality standards.
  • Attend and complete all required state and federal training to obtain and maintain certifications and perform inspections.
  • Utilize computers and agency software for training, performance evaluations, and record keeping.
  • Use computer programs such as email, Word, Excel, and WYDOT reporting tools.
  • Supervise others to schedule daily work activities in a safe work environment.
  • Make independent decisions and exercise sound judgment on a daily basis.
Qualifications
  • Education: Associate’s Degree (typically in Engineering) required. University coursework may serve as a substitute for up to 2 years of experience.
  • Experience: 0–2 years of progressive work experience in highway maintenance or highway construction (minimum level of a Highway Maintenance Technician) required. 2–4 years of experience may substitute for advanced education.
  • Certifications: Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License within 12 months of hire.
  • Knowledge: Experience with highway maintenance operations, computer hardware and software, state and federal highway safety and traffic control standards, equipment maintenance, mechanical diagnosis, hazardous materials response, and personal protective equipment.
  • Skills: Ability to operate single and tandem axle trucks, loaders, and tractors; ability to work with specialized heavy equipment; first aid and CPR certification; OSHA safety compliance.
  • Knowledge of: State highway pavement marking and signage standards, federal and state highway safety standards, and safe work procedures.
Physical Working Conditions
  • Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools.
  • Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous materials.
  • Ability to lift or carry 50 pounds independently.
  • Ability to stand, sit, and operate equipment for long periods of time.
  • Work in adverse environmental conditions including rain, snow, heat, and hail.
  • Ability to walk long periods on even and uneven ground.
  • Work around high‑speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
  • Available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays; must report to the department shop within 30 minutes of receiving a call.
  • Subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Notes
  • FLSA:
    Non‑Exempt.
  • WYDOT conducts motor vehicle record checks for valid driver's license verification.
  • Pre‑employment drug screening and periodic random drug and alcohol testing required.
  • Occasional overnight travel may be required.
  • Water certifications and defensive driving, first aid/CPR, and flagger certifications will be provided by WYDOT.
