General DescriptionThe Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is committed to providing a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the people of Wyoming. We are currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Technician for our Maintenance Program located in Afton, Wyoming.
As a Highway Maintenance Technician, you will perform a variety of roadway maintenance duties—under limited supervision—to help keep Wyoming’s transportation system safe and reliable for the traveling public.

- Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently
- Assists with training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipment
- Under limited supervision, flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices
- Operates heavy equipment including trucks, augers, aerial lifts, plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from roadway surfaces
- Responsible for the rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings
- Responsible for general maintenance of highway‑related facilities such as rest areas, including performing water and wastewater treatment per EPA and DEQ requirements
- Attends and completes all state and federal training required to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills
- Communicates information to update others’ status and/or process effectiveness
- Utilizes computers for agency practices, such as training and performance evaluations, and keeps up to date on technological advances related to specialized equipment
- Performs duties involved in removing snow and ice from roadways; determines effectiveness of treatments and may determine when a change in treatment is necessary
- Adheres to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including correct use of all personal protective equipment
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements prior to employment
- Ability to obtain water certifications if necessary
- Ability to obtain a certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT
- Ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion in Defensive Driving
- Ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification
- Ability to obtain a Flagger certification
- State highway pavement marking and signing standards
- State and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures
- Equipment maintenance and repair procedures
- Hazardous materials response procedures
- Federal and state requirements for proper use of personal protective equipment
- Basic equipment operation for single and tandem axle trucks, loaders, and tractors
- Safe work procedures, First Aid and CPR, and OSHA safety data sheets for chemicals used in maintenance activities
- Basic office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephones
Education & Experience (Substitution): 2–4 years of relevant work experience typically in Highway Maintenance/Construction.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License within twelve (12) months of hire
Education Alternative:
- Associate’s Degree (typically in Engineering)
- 0–1 year of related work experience typically in Highway Maintenance/Construction
- Ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License within twelve (12) months of hire
- Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools
- Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment
- Frequent exposure to hazardous materials
- Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently
- Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods
