General Description

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is committed to providing a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the people of Wyoming. We are currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Technician for our Maintenance Program located in Afton, Wyoming.

As a Highway Maintenance Technician, you will perform a variety of roadway maintenance duties—under limited supervision—to help keep Wyoming’s transportation system safe and reliable for the traveling public.

Essential Functions
  • Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently
  • Assists with training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipment
  • Under limited supervision, flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices
  • Operates heavy equipment including trucks, augers, aerial lifts, plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from roadway surfaces
  • Responsible for the rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings
  • Responsible for general maintenance of highway‑related facilities such as rest areas, including performing water and wastewater treatment per EPA and DEQ requirements
  • Attends and completes all state and federal training required to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills
  • Communicates information to update others’ status and/or process effectiveness
  • Utilizes computers for agency practices, such as training and performance evaluations, and keeps up to date on technological advances related to specialized equipment
  • Performs duties involved in removing snow and ice from roadways; determines effectiveness of treatments and may determine when a change in treatment is necessary
  • Adheres to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including correct use of all personal protective equipment
Preferences
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements prior to employment
  • Ability to obtain water certifications if necessary
  • Ability to obtain a certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT
  • Ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion in Defensive Driving
  • Ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification
  • Ability to obtain a Flagger certification
Knowledge
  • State highway pavement marking and signing standards
  • State and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures
  • Equipment maintenance and repair procedures
  • Hazardous materials response procedures
  • Federal and state requirements for proper use of personal protective equipment
  • Basic equipment operation for single and tandem axle trucks, loaders, and tractors
  • Safe work procedures, First Aid and CPR, and OSHA safety data sheets for chemicals used in maintenance activities
  • Basic office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephones
Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience (Substitution): 2–4 years of relevant work experience typically in Highway Maintenance/Construction.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License within twelve (12) months of hire

Education Alternative:

  • Associate’s Degree (typically in Engineering)
  • 0–1 year of related work experience typically in Highway Maintenance/Construction
  • Ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License within twelve (12) months of hire
Physical Working Conditions
  • Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools
  • Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous materials
  • Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently
