Location: Saratoga
General Description
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) seeks a reliable Highway Maintenance Technician to perform highway and infrastructure maintenance duties under limited supervision. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining heavy equipment, performing roadway repairs, supporting snow and ice control operations, assisting with traffic control, and conducting routine inspections of roadways and right-of-way areas.

- Maintain and operate complex equipment safely and proficiently
- Assist in training other technicians in equipment operation and maintenance
- Flag traffic and set up traffic control devices under limited supervision
- Operate heavy equipment, including single and tandem axle trucks, augers, aerial lift equipment, plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems for snow and ice removal
- Rehabilitate roadway surfaces and traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings
- Maintain highway‑related facilities such as rest areas and perform water and wastewater treatment per EPA and DEQ requirements
- Attend and complete all required state and federal training for certifications, inspections, and skill development
- Communicate status and process effectiveness updates to others
- Utilize computers for agency practices such as training, performance evaluations, and stay current with equipment technology
- Remove snow and ice from roadways, evaluating treatment effectiveness and determining changes as necessary
- Adhere to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including proper use of personal protective equipment
- 2–4 years of relevant work experience in highway maintenance or construction
- Ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License within 12 months of hire
- Associate’s degree in engineering or related field; or 0–1 year of experience with an associate’s degree
- Certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT
- Course completion in Defensive Driving
- First Aid/CPR certification
- Flagger certification
- State highway pavement marking and signing standards
- State and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures
- Equipment maintenance and repair procedures
- Hazardous materials response procedures
- Federal and state PPE requirements
- Operating single and tandem‑axle trucks, loaders, and tractors
- First Aid, CPR, and OSHA SDS for chemicals
- Basic office equipment use (computers, calculators, telephones)
- Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools
- Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment
- Exposure to hazardous materials
- Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds independently
- Standing, sitting, and operating equipment for long periods
- Work in adverse environmental conditions (rain, snow, heat, hail)
- Walking long periods on even and uneven ground
- Operating near high‑speed traffic and heavy construction equipment
- FLSA:
Non‑Exempt - Drug screening, physical, and random drug/alcohol testing required
- Availability for emergency work at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Report to the department shop within 30 minutes of a call
- Wildlife and other site‑specific safety requirements may apply
