Anticipated starting salary: $32,136 to $42,620
Non‑Exempt (FLSA designation) – Full‑time position
Position SummaryThe Laborer performs a variety of unskilled or semi‑skilled maintenance work and operates equipment for construction, operation, repair, and maintenance of buildings, traffic signals, streets, sidewalks, curbing, and storm drainage facilities and systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Perform labor for construction and maintenance projects, often as part of a crew.
- Implant construction, maintenance, and operating activities for streets and drainage services.
- Clean brush, leaves, snow, trash and refuse; mow, weed‑eat, trim trees, and perform other cleanup duties.
- Operate light and medium‑sized construction, maintenance, and power equipment (e.g., mechanized brooms, mowers, tampers).
- Drive trucks of various sizes, load and unload tools, equipment, and materials needed for Public Works.
- Maintain equipment and tools by cleaning, checking, and performing routine inspections and preventive maintenance.
- Perform all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
- Assist in training other employees to improve skill levels in street and storm‑drainage maintenance.
- Comply with Department and Town of Wytheville policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent and at least six months of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A valid state driver’s license that is maintained in good standing.
- Preferred: at least two (2) years of recent experience in construction, maintenance, or repair.
- Preferred: CDL certification or ability to obtain one.
