Function

The Nurse is a professional person appointed to manage the medical care of juveniles at the Greene County Juvenile Detention Center in Xenia, Ohio. The Nurse has primary responsibility for managing operational activities of the medical program while promoting the goals, objects and mission of the organization, while also ensuring the health and well‑being of the youth in the Court’s care.

The Nurse is charged with providing a standard of performance in accordance with the Ohio Administrative Code and the Ohio Revised Code regarding the Ohio Department of Juvenile Services standards for Community Correctional Facilities, the American Correction Association standards for Juvenile Residential Correctional Facilities, the Prison Rape Elimination Act and medical standards consistent with licensure as a Registered Nurse. The Nurse is an unclassified employee appointed by, and serves at the pleasure of, the Greene County Juvenile Court Judge under provision 2151.13 of the Ohio Revised Code.

Duties/Responsibilities

JOB DUTIES (Examples may not be comprehensive):

  • Medical Direct Care:
    Conduct physical assessment of each new resident; interface with staff physician or outside facility for medical care; maintain accurate medical charts; conduct sick call pursuant to Nurse Request form; establish treatment plans for illness, injury or preventive care; transport juveniles for medical treatment.
  • Medication Management:
    Administer and supervise self‑administration of medications; inspect and approve medications; prepare prescription treatment plans and medication instructions; maintain count of controlled substances; maintain security of medications; prepare medications for home release; interface with pharmacy.
  • Psychiatric Services Support:
    Interface with Mental Health Professionals and review referrals for psychiatric evaluations; consult with Mental Health Professionals regarding assessment and reporting progress to parent; schedule appointments for psychiatric evaluations; prepare intake chart and approval form for all evaluation and treatment sessions with the juvenile and/or parent; follow directives from the psychiatrist regarding medications, labs and/or treatment procedures ordered for mental health diagnoses;

    obtain medications ordered; establish treatment plan for medications and maintain current supply of medications.
  • Administrative Function:
    Assist in development of medical policies and procedures; maintain medical records and audit files in accordance with American Correctional Association standards; provide written instructions and reports to parents/guardians regarding medical care; inform parent/guardian of medication changes; interface with court officials regarding medical concerns; attend court hearings and/or submit written reports regarding medical issues; coordinate with Director regarding development of sensitive medical protocols;

    schedule medical Temporary Releases; maintain inventory of medical supplies.
  • Medical Training:
    Train direct‑care staff in medical policies and procedures including self‑administration of medication; manage monthly inspection of first aid equipment; assist regarding American Correctional Association and Prison Rape Elimination Act training requirements; assist and/or deliver CPR/AED and First Aid training; provide health training, including hygiene, for residents.
  • Quality Assurance:
    Conduct regular program evaluations; engage in program development to effect improvements.
  • Infection Control:
    Conduct a medical assessment of all new employees, including employees who report infectious diseases; maintain infection control safety procedures; instruct and maintain records of annual blood‑borne pathogen training for staff; administer and record annual TB screening to direct care staff; administer flu vaccinations to residents and staff, as needed; maintain clean/sanitary medical clinic, including medical supplies and equipment.
