Heavy Civil Supervisor

This is an opportunity to deliver technical and professional engineering, construction, and maintenance to sustain facilities, infrastructure, and ecosystems. With your experience, you will provide leadership to a team of skilled professionals in the transportation and operation of heavy equipment.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, this position will:

  • Independently prepare drawings and sketches to illustrate fabrication projects for staff to follow, as well as convey verbal instructions. Prepare as-built drawings for components designed internally.
  • Participate in conceptual and 30-60-90 drawing reviews, providing expertise to mitigate issues of functionality or feasibility. Identify issues or conflicts that would require adjustments or exemptions to ordinary construction practices.
  • Analyze project specifications for sequence of work, material and personnel requirements, and scheduling of material and equipment deliveries. Identify material or services that require purchasing contracts and develops specifications for the bidding process. Prepare detailed cost estimates.
  • Provide onsite inspection of components, equipment, and fixtures to determine need for maintenance or repair.

Supervision and Mentoring.

  • Supervise a team of journey level workers in the transportation and operation of heavy equipment through scheduling, directing, coordinating and supervising in the various phases of construction.
  • Supervise and mentor technical and professional level staff in order to support an effective, motivated team.
  • Set goals and objectives, develop strategies to implement, and develop performance measurements and standards for the purpose of ensuring individual and program performance objectives are met.
  • Monitor and inspect work in progress to ensure continuity and timely completion of work.

Heavy Construction Equipment Operation and Maintenance.

  • Provide expert operation of construction and earth moving equipment.
  • Inspect, operate, and transport all types of heavy earthmoving equipment.
  • Clear, remove, and transport mud and debris from on-site hatchery abatement ponds, intake structures, demolition projects and general construction tasks using excavators, boom trucks, backhoes, and dump trucks.
  • Work around, expose, and install sensitive buried utilities and alarm lines using backhoes and track excavators.

Plumbing.

  • Install, disassemble, and replace a multitude of plumbing components such as pipes, valves, gates, couplers, manifolds, etc.
  • Inspect supply lines, fixtures, and valves to determine cause of failures and recommend actions for maintenance and repair.
  • Carpentry.

    • Demolish or alter buildings, sheds, concrete forms, and other structures from plans, sketches or instructions.
    • Pour and finish concrete curbs, driveways, walkways, and general pads.
    • Prepare the site for installation by removing old signage and prepping the surface for the mounting, construction, and installation of the new signage.

    Working Conditions:

    Work setting:
    Duties are performed at construction sites in the Hatcheries and Wildlife areas and on occasion in an office setting. Hazards include working on rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes, and other surfaces, confined and difficult to reach spaces, and in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat, rain, or snow. Bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, and lifting of 50 pounds repetitively when loading and unloading trucks or moving materials around project sites.

    This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments.

    Schedule:

    Full-time, working 40 hours per week. Typically, this position works Monday – Thursday, 6:00 AM – 4:30 PM. The standard work schedule includes the potential for occasional evening or weekend work as needed. Alternative schedules may be considered based on business needs.

    Travel requirements:
    Travel required 80-90% depending on season.

    Customer Interactions:
    Frequent interactions varying between Federal, Local, Inter-Agency, and Intra-Agency customers and vendors.

    Qualifications:

    Required Qualifications:

    Option 1:

    Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience performing construction, maintenance, heavy equipment operations, facilities management, public works, transportation infrastructure, natural resource infrastructure, or related construction activities.

    Option 2:

    Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in one or more construction trades (e.g., carpentry, electrical, plumbing, welding, heavy equipment operation, concrete, or related trades) and two (2) years of journey-level experience performing construction, maintenance, or infrastructure projects.

    For BOTH options above, the following are also required:

    • Valid driver's license.
    • Class A Commercial Driver's License.
