Special Education DLC Paraprofessional @ Wide Hollow Elementary Job Description
The job of instructional paraprofessional is to assist in the supervision and instruction of students, monitor students in a variety of settings (classroom, playground, cafeteria, library, bus loading, field trips, etc.) and provide general support to the assigned certificated teacher(s).
Directly Responsible to: Classroom teacher and building principal
Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- At least one of the following: 2 year post‑secondary degree or more, 72 quarter credits at a post‑secondary school, passed ETS Paraprofessional Assessment
Essential Functions
- Assist students individually or in small groups in a variety of learning activities assigned by the teacher to present and/or reinforce learning concepts and help them reach their academic goals and potential.
- Follow a structured teaching and learning plan.
- Carry out direct instruction tutoring.
- Assist students in understanding whole‑group instruction.
- Guide independent work.
- Provide practice on identified skill areas.
- Incorporate IEP requirements within students’ daily lesson plans as directed by the teacher.
- Maintain records and charts indicating students’ progress.
- Inform classroom teacher of students’ progress.
- Maintain classroom equipment, work areas, and student files/records (e.g., adapt instructional materials, clean work area, take attendance, check homework, grade papers, audio‑visual equipment) to ensure availability of items and reliable information.
- Assist teacher in monitoring student behavior and discipline students as authorized.
- Monitor students in various settings (e.g., classroom, playground, cafeteria, library, halls, bus, field trips, in‑house detention) to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
- Teach and reinforce appropriate behavior.
- Restrain students from harming themselves or others.
- Perform record‑keeping and clerical functions (copying, laminating, correcting papers, phone calls, scheduling activities) to support the teacher and provide necessary records/materials.
- Provide detailed one‑to‑one assistance with changing, diapering, personal hygiene, etc., if required.
- Assist students with feeding and administer tube feeding if required.
- Mainstream students in general‑education settings as requested.
- Serve as the chief source of information and help to substitute teachers with assigned students.
- Attend meetings and trainings as requested.
- Fulfill other related duties as assigned, including riding the bus before/after school.
- Certified in Safety Care or similar program.
Other Functions
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
- Utilize reasonable and professional judgment.
- Observe and apply professional medical/safety precautions when positioning children in adaptive equipment and transferring orthopedically disabled children to/from equipment, including toilets.
- Assist other personnel as required to ensure an efficient and effective work environment.
Working Relationships
Communicate regularly with students, parents/guardians, and teaching staff. Required to manage a wide range of student behaviors and physical/emotional disabilities; may occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a classroom setting; may work outdoors in inclement weather; participate in daily physical education classes; take several brisk walks per day; lift, move, and position students and equipment; supervise the playground and bus loading/unloading; attend to students’ personal hygiene; may be exposed to biting, spitting, and hitting; may need precautions to avoid exposure to bodily fluids and cleaning compounds;
require extended periods in non‑routine positions.
Typical physical demands include occasional lifting up to 50 pounds, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity; generally 34% sitting, 33% walking, 33% standing.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Ability to tutor individuals and/or groups, follow a structured teaching plan, operate standard office equipment, and maintain accurate records.
