One-to-One DLC Special Education Paraprofessional @ Wide Hollow Elementary Job Description

The job of the One-to-One DLC Special Education Paraprofessional is to assist in the supervision and instruction of students, monitor students in various settings (classroom, playground, cafeteria, library, bus loading, field trips, etc.) and provide general support to the assigned certificated teacher(s).

Directly Responsible to: Classroom teacher and building principal

Minimum Qualifications

The ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) requires that all Washington State Paraprofessionals MUST have a High School Diploma or GED and at least ONE of the following requirements:

  • 2 year post-secondary degree or more
  • 72 quarter credits at a post-secondary school
  • Passed ETS Paraprofessional Assessment
Essential Functions
  • Assist students individually or in small groups in learning activities assigned by the teacher to present and/or reinforce learning concepts and reach academic goals.
  • Follow a structured teaching and learning plan.
  • Carry out direct instruction tutoring.
  • Assist students in understanding whole group instruction.
  • Guide independent work.
  • Provide students with practice on identified skill areas.
  • Incorporate IEP requirements within students’ daily lesson plans as directed by the teacher.
  • Maintain records and charts indicating students’ progress, and inform the classroom teacher of progress.
  • Maintain classroom equipment, work areas, and student files/records to ensure availability of items and reliable information.
  • Assist the teacher in monitoring student behavior and discipline students as authorized.
  • Monitor individual and/or groups of students in multiple settings to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Teach and reinforce appropriate behavior with students.
  • Restrain students from harming themselves or others.
  • Perform record keeping and clerical functions (copying, laminating, correcting papers, phone calls, scheduling activities, etc.) to support the teacher.
  • Might provide detailed one-to-one assistance with changing, diapering, personal hygiene, etc.
  • Might assist students with feeding and administer tube feeding.
  • Mainstream students in general education settings as requested.
  • Serve as the chief source of information and help to substitute teachers with assigned students.
  • Attend meetings and trainings as requested.
  • Fulfill other related duties as assigned, including riding the school bus before and/or after school.
  • Be certified in Right Response De-Escalation/Restraint or a similar program.
  • Drive district vehicle with students to and from community-based learning settings.
Other Functions
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  • Utilize reasonable and professional judgment.
  • Observe and utilize professional medical/safety precautions, including positioning children safely in adaptive equipment and transferring orthopedically disabled children to and from different equipment such as toilets.
  • Assist other personnel as required to ensure an efficient work environment.
  • Bilingual preferred.
Working Relationships

Communicate regularly with students, parents/guardians, and teaching staff. Deal with a wide range of student behaviors, physical and emotional disabilities, and occasionally distraught or difficult students.

Working Conditions

Daily work is performed in a classroom setting, with possible outdoor work in inclement weather. Activities include participating in daily physical education classes, taking brisk walks, lifting, moving, and positioning students and equipment, supervising the playground, bus loading/unloading, attending to students’ personal hygiene, and handling potential biting, spitting, or hitting behaviors. Precautions are taken to avoid exposure to bodily fluids and cleaning or disinfecting compounds.

Work involves non-routine positions for extended periods.

Working Environment

Physical demands include occasional lifting (up to 50 pounds) and assisting in lifting over 50 pounds; carrying, pushing, pulling; stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; and fine finger dexterity. Typically 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing. The environment is generally hazard free and…
