Job Description

In the  School Year the One-to-One DLC Special Education Paraprofessional assists in the supervision and instruction of students, monitors students in a variety of settings (classroom, playground, cafeteria, library, bus loading, field trips, etc.) and provides general support to the assigned certificated teacher(s).

Directly Responsible to: Classroom teacher and building principal

Minimum Qualifications

The ESSA requires that all Washington State Paraprofessionals MUST have a High School Diploma or GED and at least ONE of the following:

  • 2 year post‑secondary degree or more
  • 72 quarter credits at a post‑secondary school
  • Passed ETS Paraprofessional Assessment
Essential Functions
  • Assist students individually or in small groups in learning activities assigned by the teacher to present and reinforce learning concepts and reach academic goals.
  • Follow a structured teaching and learning plan.
  • Carry out direct instruction tutoring.
  • Assist students in understanding whole group instruction.
  • Guide independent work.
  • Provide students with practice on identified skill areas.
  • Incorporate IEP requirements within students’ daily lesson plans as directed by the teacher.
  • Maintain records and charts indicating students’ progress.
  • Inform classroom teacher of students’ progress.
  • Maintain classroom equipment, work areas, student files/records (e.g., adapting instructional materials, cleaning work area, taking attendance, checking homework, grading papers, audio‑visual equipment, etc.) to ensure availability and reliability.
  • Assist teacher in monitoring student behavior and disciplining students as authorized.
  • Monitor individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Teach and reinforce appropriate behavior with students.
  • Restrain students from harming themselves or others.
  • Perform record‑keeping and clerical functions to support the teacher and provide necessary records/materials.
  • Provide detailed one‑to‑one assistance with changing, diapering, personal hygiene, etc., when required.
  • Assist students with feeding and administer tube feeding when required.
  • Mainstream students in general education settings as requested.
  • Serve as the chief source of information and help to substitute teachers with assigned students.
  • Attend meetings and trainings as requested.
  • Fulfill other related duties as assigned (e.g., riding the school bus before and/or after school).
  • Be certified in Safety Care or similar program.
  • Drive district vehicle with students to and from community‑based learning settings.
Other Functions
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  • Utilize reasonable and professional judgment.
  • Observe and utilize professional medical/safety precautions when positioning children, using adaptive equipment, and transferring orthopedically disabled children.
  • Assist other personnel to ensure an efficient and effective work environment.
  • Bilingual preferred.
Working Relationships

Communicate regularly with students, parents/guardians, and teaching staff. Handle a wide range of student behaviors, physical and emotional disabilities, and occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students.

Working Conditions

Daily work is performed in a classroom setting. May require outdoor work in inclement weather, participation in daily physical education classes, brisk walks, lifting, moving, and positioning of students and equipment, supervising the playground and bus loading/unloading, attending to students’ personal hygiene, and dealing with biting, spitting, and hitting behavior. Potential exposure to student bodily fluids and cleaning compounds. Non‑routine positions for extended periods are common.
