One-to-One DLC Special Education Paraprofessional @ Ahtanum Valley Elementary Job Description
The One-to-One DLC Special Education Paraprofessional assists in the supervision and instruction of students, monitoring students in various settings (classroom, playground, cafeteria, library, bus loading, field trips, etc.) and providing general support to assigned certificated teacher(s).
Directly Responsible ToClassroom teacher and building principal.
Job Requirements:Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- At least one of the following: 2‑year post‑secondary degree or more; 72 quarter credits at a post‑secondary school;
Passed ETS Paraprofessional Assessment.
- Assist students individually or in small groups in learning activities assigned by the teacher to present and reinforce learning concepts.
- Follow a structured teaching and learning plan.
- Carry out direct instruction tutoring.
- Assist students in understanding whole group instruction.
- Guide independent work.
- Provide practice on identified skill areas.
- Incorporate IEP requirements into students’ daily lesson plans.
- Maintain records and charts indicating student progress.
- Inform classroom teacher of student progress.
- Maintain classroom equipment, work areas, and student files/records (e.g., adapting instructional materials, cleaning work area, taking attendance, checking homework, grading papers, audiovisual equipment).
- Assist teacher in monitoring student behavior and discipline students as authorized.
- Monitor students in various settings to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
- Teach and reinforce appropriate behavior.
- Restrain students from harming themselves or others.
- Perform record keeping and clerical functions (copying, laminating, correcting papers, phone calls, scheduling activities).
- Provide detailed one‑to‑one assistance with changing, diapering, personal hygiene.
- Assist students with feeding and administer tube feeding.
- Mainstream students in general education settings as requested.
- Serve as the primary source of information for substitute teachers with assigned students.
- Attend meetings and trainings as requested.
- Perform other related duties as assigned, which may include riding the school bus before and/or after school.
- Be certified in Safety Care or a similar program.
- Drive district vehicle with students to and from community‑based learning settings.
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
- Utilize reasonable and professional judgment.
- Observe and apply medical/safety precautions when positioning children and transferring orthopedically disabled children.
- Assist other personnel as required to ensure an efficient work environment.
- Bilingual preferred.
Communicate regularly with students, parents/guardians, and teaching staff, and address a wide range of student behaviors and disabilities.
Working ConditionsDaily work performed in a classroom setting, with occasional outdoor work in inclement weather. Responsibilities include physical activity such as walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. The role requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities- Instructional skills: tutoring individuals/groups, following structured plans, operating standard office equipment, maintaining accurate records.
- Knowledge of high‑school level math, grammar, punctuation, child development stages, and learning styles.
- Abilities to identify and adjust to individual student needs, innovate, communicate effectively, follow complex instructions, schedule activities, collate data, and work with diverse individuals.
Work under direct supervision using standardized routines, provide information/advice, and operate within a defined budget.
ExperienceJob‑related experience desired; previous experience working with students who have autism is preferred.
Continuing Education/TrainingCPR Certificate and First Aid Certificate may be required.
Work Schedule7 hours per day, 5 days a week.
