HOURS: 2 hours / day, 8:40am- 9:20am and 2:40pm-3:20pm, July 15-17, 20-25, 27-31, 2026

Job Description

The Para educator for the Special Education Bus Route is responsible for providing assistance and support to students with disabilities during their transportation to and from school. This role is crucial in ensuring a safe, respectful, and accommodating environment for all students while on the school bus.

Key Responsibilities
  • Student Supervision:
    Monitor and assist students with disabilities during bus rides. Ensure safety and adherence to behavioral guidelines.
  • Support Needs:
    Provide individualized support based on each student’s IEP (Individualized Education Program), including assistance with mobility, communication, and any specific needs related to their disabilities.
  • Behavior Management:
    Implement positive behavior support strategies as outlined in students’ IEPs or behavioral plans. Intervene and manage minor behavioral issues during transit.
  • Emergency Preparedness:
    Respond to emergencies or unexpected situations effectively, maintaining the safety and well‑being of all students.
  • Communication:
    Maintain clear and effective communication with bus drivers, special education teachers, and parents regarding students’ needs, behaviors, and any incidents that occur during transit.
  • Documentation:
    Document daily observations and incidents, as required, and provide input for the development or modification of students’ IEPs.
  • Training and Development:
    Participate in professional development and training related to special education, behavior management, and emergency procedures.
Qualifications
  • Experience working with children, preferably in an educational or caregiving setting.
  • Understanding of special education needs and the IEP process.
  • Ability to manage challenging behaviors with patience and empathy.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
  • OSPI successful background check through the FBI and WSP within the past two years.
Working Conditions
  • Working on a moving vehicle with exposure to varying noise levels.
  • May require physical assistance to students, including lifting or supporting mobility.

  • Significant: (i.e., sitting, talking, hearing, walking, vision, color vision, peripheral/depth perception, ability to adjust focus, grasping, handling paperwork, repetitive motion, use of a personal computer, looking at a computer monitor, lifting up to 10 pounds)
  • Frequent: (i.e., standing, bending, carrying, stooping, crouching, kneeling, grasping the use of phone; use of copy machine)
  • Occasional: (i.e., driving, lifting over 10 pounds up to 45 pounds, reaching above the shoulder, use of fax machine)

- Occupation requires this activity from 33% to 66% of the time (2.5 to 5.5+ hours/day)
