Mechanic I/II

There is one Mechanic I/II position open with Yakima County ER&R. The Mechanic I/II is responsible for performing journey level maintenance and repair of county automotive and heavy equipment; troubleshoots, diagnoses and repairs equipment malfunctions; provide preventative maintenance services; fabricates and repairs wearing and operating parts and monitors equipment to ensure it is in safe working order.

Essential Duties:

• Performs preventive maintenance activities for County automotive vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Performs maintenance and repairs on automotive vehicles and heavy equipment; replaces air, hydraulic and anti-lock brakes; repairs transmissions; works on electrical systems; repairs heating and cooling systems; and repairs engines.
• Diagnoses and troubleshoots vehicle and heavy equipment problems in the shop and in the field. Operates or transports equipment back to shop for repair.
• Designs and fabricates equipment parts not readily available including welding fatigued or failed components, converting equipment to meet seasonal needs and adding modifications to existing equipment.
• Provides technical advice to others working in the shop and monitors shop equipment to ensure that the equipment is in safe working order.
• Other duties required.

Education & Experience:

Mechanic I:

High School or (G.E.D.) AND Additional five (5) years of automotive and/or heavy equipment maintenance and repair or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Mechanic II:

High School or (G.E.D.) AND additional six (6) years automotive and heavy equipment maintenance experience OR six (6) years' experience in welding, metal design and fabrication, automotive repair and heavy equipment maintenance OR an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Required:

Mechanic I:

• Valid State of Washington Driver's License and proof of insurance, if requested.

• Ability to obtain a valid State of Washington Flagger Certification required for County Road assignments within 30 days of hire.

• Successful completion of general employment verification

Mechanic II:

Valid WA State Commercial Driver's License Class A with Airbrake Endorsement

• Ability to obtain a valid State of Washington Flagger Certification required for County Road assignments within 30 days of hire.

• Successful completion of general employment verification

• Mechanic II:
Required for Consent for queries of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse to comply with Federal Regulations (49 CFR Part 382).

Preferred:

Associate Degree in diesel technology or related field from an approved automotive program and 4 years automotive and/or heavy equipment maintenance experience.

Welding and metal fabrication experience.

Working Conditions:

This position is rated as Heavy Work:
Exerting up to or in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work is performed out in the field.

Environment: excessive noise, exposure to weather, extreme temperatures, moving/mechanical parts, pathogen exposure, vibration, travel, multiple work locations, field work, and work is performed in and around County roadways

Physical Demands: bending, carrying, handling, lifting, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, fingering, balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, kneeling, hearing, talking, and visual acuity, driving, mobility, and repetitive motions.
