Title: Elementary General Music Teacher

Job Description: The elementary music teacher will be responsible for providing the JrK-5 Yankton Music Curriculum to students in grades JrK-5. Responsibilities include providing classroom music instruction and participating in formal concerts. The teacher will work cooperatively with other music educators to meet the grade music curriculum standards for the district. It is also expected that the music educator collaborates with all the district's K-12 music educators to enhance music education for all students.

Holds an appropriate South Dakota Teaching Certificate (Music Education)

Essential Functions and Duties

1. Teaches skills in music understanding/appreciation, harmony, explorations in music, and choral music to elementary students.

2. Plans/executes a balanced music program and organizes class time so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.

3. Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the music curriculum to the needs of each student.

4. Encourages students to develop individual musical skills to the greatest extent possible.

5. Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.

6. Maintains care/responsibility for school-owned music, musical instruments, and equipment to prevent loss or abuse.

6. Makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.

7. Evaluates each student's musical growth, performance, and musical understanding.

8. Assesses each individual's contribution to the performance of the group.

9. Selects appropriate music, books and instructional aids to enhance learning and requisitions musical instruments and instructional supplies as necessary.

10. Cooperation with the Building Principal and staff in providing musical programs for school assemblies, open house, parent meetings and seasonal programs.

11. Communicates with parents and school staff on individual student's progress.

12. Participates in after-school band rehearsals for 5th graders under the direction of the YMS band director.
