Crushing Systems Design Engineer

Under general supervision of the Portable and Stationary Systems Engineering Manager, the Crushing Systems Design Engineer is responsible for design efforts from inception through production in new product development and custom order fulfillment focused on Stationary Plants and Wheeled Portable Plants.

The role requires attendance at one of Astec Material Solutions facilities.

• Perform design engineering for Astec product development and improvement projects.
• Effectively use 3‑D CAD to model designs and apply engineering tools such as FEA to optimize solutions.
• Create, review, and maintain thorough engineering specifications and drawings.
• Manage engineering changes according to established company procedures.
• Serve as a technical resource to support operations, quality, purchasing, service, and other departments.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including sales, manufacturing, purchasing, and service.
• Develop cost‑effective design concepts in partnership with supply chain operations.
• Perform root‑cause analysis to identify opportunities for product improvement and implement corrective actions.
• Interact with production personnel to define and solve manufacturing or design issues and propose cost‑reduction ideas.
• Document assigned tasks and progress per supervisor directives.
• Ensure compliance with internal company standards, safety regulations, and company policies.
• Support travel to meet customers, dealers, and suppliers as required.

• Positive, cooperative working relationships and strong interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency with 3‑D CAD software (Solid Works preferred), Microsoft Office Suite, and ERP systems (Oracle preferred).
• Excellent written and oral communication for documenting ideas, designs, reports, and presentations to managers and customers.
• Strong organization, time‑management, and ability to set daily priorities while managing multiple tasks.
• Willingness to accept responsibility and take on new challenges.
• Discretion and independent judgment on a routine basis.
• Ability to work from sketches, marked‑up prints, and verbal instructions to deliver concept‑to‑solution designs.
• Experience reviewing customer drawings, specifications, and determining feasibility.
• Capability to develop and guide mechanical and hydraulic computations, such as load development, stress analysis, performance measurement, hydraulic circuit analysis, and costing.
• Strong problem‑solving skills, including root‑cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
• Ability to comply with safety regulations, use personal protective equipment, and maintain a safe work environment.
• Familiarity with airline and ground travel requirements.
