Position: Design Engineer-Washing Equipment (27775211)

About the Position

Under general supervision of the NPD Engineering Manager, the NPD Design Engineer is responsible for design efforts from inception through production in new product development.

This position will focus on washing and classifying equipment such as sand screws, log washers, coarse material washers, sand classifiers, dewatering screens, centrifugal pumps, and cyclones. Experience with these products is preferred but not mandatory.

The preferred site location is Yankton, SD. Applicants from all Astec locations are encouraged to apply.

The Design Engineer position at Astec has four levels depending on experience and specialty. Engineers may specialize in new and existing product development/design, product safety, manufacturing set‑up, hydraulic and electrical product development/design. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with other engineers, cross‑functional teams, and will develop conceptual and final design solutions, manage and coordinate project activities, support existing product offerings, and perform testing or analysis of new and existing products to further Astec’s product line development goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform design engineering as it relates to Astec product development and improvement projects.

  • Effectively use 3‑D CAD to model designs and employ other engineering tools such as FEA to optimize solutions.

  • Create, check and maintain thorough engineering specifications and drawings.

  • Manage engineering changes per established company procedures.

  • Serve as a technical resource to support other departments such as operations, quality, purchasing, and service.

  • Develop and conduct root cause analysis and other problem‑solving activities to improve products and implement corrective actions.

  • Interact with production personnel to define and solve manufacturing and design issues and implement cost‑reduction ideas.

  • Follow internal company standards when creating or inputting data.

  • Perform work according to supervisor’s directives when requested.

Qualifications
  • Maintain positive, cooperative working relationships and interact effectively with customers, vendors, co‑workers, and management.

  • Use interpersonal skills as an effective member of cross‑functional project teams from concept to production.

  • Demonstrate technical and written skills for documenting ideas, designs, and concepts.

  • Proficient with personal computing, Microsoft Office Suite, 3‑D CAD software (Solid Works preferred), and ERP systems (Oracle preferred).

  • Good organization and time‑management skills; ability to set daily priorities and adapt to changing project demands.

  • Willingness to accept responsibility for assigned tasks and take on new challenges.

  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment on a regular basis.

  • Effectively work with sketches, marked‑up prints, and verbal instructions to drive concept to solution.

  • Review customer drawings, specifications, and other applicable documents to determine requirements and/or feasibility of components.

  • Develop design concepts to meet required cost objectives, including involvement with supply‑chain operations for component selection.

  • Develop and/or guide necessary computations such as load development, stress analysis, performance measurement, hydraulic circuit analysis, costing, etc., and interpret the results as necessary.

  • Responsible for achieving due dates and predefined requirements set by management.

  • Follow internal company standards and policies, with a primary emphasis on safe operations.

  • Education:

    Minimum bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Agricultural, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering, or related field.
