Regulatory Compliance Specialist
Overview
Senior Director, EHS Regulatory: leading regulatory compliance and sustainability initiatives. Oversee a talented regulatory team to achieve 100% compliance with OSHA, EPA, local, state, and federal regulations and internal policies. Direct daily operations of water facilities across Smithfield locations and develop SOPs and guidelines that align with regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities- Establish and maintain compliance with applicable federal and state environmental, health, and safety regulations and internal requirements such as SIPS, PSM, ISO, EMS.
- Lead correspondence with regulatory agencies (OSHA, EPA, Chemical Safety) and direct the EHS team on regulatory compliance issues.
- Manage environmental permit compliance documentation and applications, ensuring timely submission.
- Create a uniform application of the company’s EHS system, promote best practices, evaluate risk, and support innovative solutions.
- Write, review, and revise key documents such as Risk Management plans, Emergency Response Plans, and Environmental Permit tracking plans.
- Train facility personnel on relevant plans and participate in corporate training and business meetings.
- Ensure water facilities maintain operational controls that meet local, state, and federal requirements.
- Represent on construction and capital projects related to anhydrous ammonia systems and waste facility projects.
- Schedule regulatory reviews with facilities to ensure compliance and promote community relations.
- Develop and implement corporate policy, programs, systems, and training materials. Conduct annual EMS internal audits and assist with corrective action and objectives.
- Drive a positive employee experience through leadership, employee development, and coaching.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering or related field and ≥12 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- ≥5 years of demonstrated team management and development experience.
- Strong knowledge of regulatory compliance.
- Ability to synthesize data from multiple resources to build actionable recommendations.
- Mathematical, quantitative, and analytical skills.
- Technical writing skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Planning, organizing, prioritizing, and time‑management skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work well with others in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment.
- Travel to other locations up to 50% of time.
- Capability to develop innovative ideas to drive work processes.
- Respectful, approachable, and team‑oriented.
- Strong team‑building skills.
Mobility: ability to bend, move, lift, and carry materials up to 50lb (70lb in some roles). Stand for up to eight hours per day during site visits or meetings. Work in various weather conditions and uneven terrain during project visits.
