Job Summary

The restorative nursing aide serves as a caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in long‑term care. Responsibilities include using appropriate mobility, balance, and strengthening exercises, incorporating them into therapeutic activities; using adaptive equipment; fall prevention; appropriate turning, positioning and repositioning techniques; basic range‑of‑motion exercises; and good body mechanics. The aide assists with and implements special programs designed to improve the resident’s quality of life, ability to perform daily activities, and maintain the highest functional level of independence.

Prior to providing care the aide obtains the resident’s report and documents resident progress of care and behaviors, recognizing and reporting changes in resident condition promptly.

Daily care responsibilities include dressing/undressing programs, grooming, bathing, toileting, exercise/movement, eating/swallowing programs, and the correct use and application of ice and paraffin baths and heat packets according to state regulations. The aide uses the EMR accurately, handles linens properly, and disposes of soiled linens, clothing or supplies in adherence to regulations and guidelines, uses standard precautions and personal protective equipment, washes hands between resident cares, and reports signs/symptoms of resident infections to appropriate staff in a timely manner.

The aide provides resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The aide is expected to follow infection prevention and control policies and personal protective equipment use, and to deliver age‑appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident as per the care plan.

Qualifications

High school graduate or GED preferred, but not required. Minimum age of 16. Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.

Required:

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing.
  • Completion of a CNA training program; at least 40 hours of specific training related to restorative care procedures.
  • Successfully completing yearly department‑specific competency testing and maintaining a record of continuing education credits each year.
  • Depending on facility and responsibilities, the role may classify as a Sanford Category II Driver, requiring a motor vehicle report and proof of a valid driver’s license, and medical qualification to perform essential driving functions per Sanford Driving Policy.
