Purpose and Scope
Functions as part of the dialysis health care team to provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean working environment, and supporting the organization’s commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities- Patient
Education:
Assist healthcare team members in providing detailed, patient‑specific education regarding adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease processes/access. - Treatment: Welcome patients, evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin, obtain pre‑ and post‑treatment vital signs, initiate dialysis according to orders, monitor for intradialytic problems, record vital signs and treatment parameters, document all interventions and outcomes, and ensure proper hemostasis and dressings.
- Perform pre‑ and post‑dialysis evaluations, weight and vital signs, calculate and enter machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, enable safety alarms, and maintain accurate documentation on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes.
- Train and supervise direct patient care staff on appropriate programs under nurse supervision.
- Prepare and disassemble dialysis machines, conduct safety checks, and maintain environmental integrity (cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and equipment).
- Complete and document CQI activities, enter all treatment data into the clinical application, review treatment sheets for completeness, and assist with the preparation of initial patient charts.
- Collect, label, and prepare laboratory specimens, ensure correct transport, and maintain label integrity as per laboratory protocols.
- Assist in infection control audits, support adherence to infection control practices, and reinforce patient/family education regarding infection control.
- Coordinate transitional dialysis care for newly admitted patients, ensuring continuity of care, teaching home dialysis options, and liaising with facility staff.
- Handle physical demands including heavy lifting up to 40 lbs., frequent standing, bending, and use of assist devices, and travel between assigned facilities and meetings.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must meet CMS‑approved state and/or national certification requirements and possess all required state licensure and training.
- Demonstrated commitment to organizational culture, values, and customer service standards.
- Previous patient care experience in a hospital or related setting preferred.
- Successful completion of the organization’s dialysis training program and CPR certification.
Hourly Rate: $17.00 - $27.00.
