Electric Utility Substation Mechanic Apprentice

• Perform standardised assignments designed to develop knowledge of standard work methods and operate substation equipment.
• Operate and maintain substation equipment from 4 kV to 345 kV, including DC and auxiliary control systems, transformers, circuit breakers and battery systems.
• Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical systems, reading schematics, electrical one‑line diagrams and control wiring diagrams.
• Assist Field Engineering and other crafts in testing and other required tasks.
• Switch and tag equipment at all voltages under the direction of the system operator or supervisors.
• Perform monthly inspections, collect data, generate reports and update records. Make repairs and correct any abnormal findings.
• Maintain substation logs and equipment records.
• Use hand and power tools to complete tasks as directed, without limitation to operating voltage, under general or close supervision.

• Two (2) years of mechanical, electrical, or related technical experience, or a combination of technical education and work experience.
• Electrical licence highly desired.
• Experience in multidisciplinary trades, with foundational knowledge across construction and mechanical disciplines preferred.
• Demonstrated mechanical inclination and a desire to learn equipment operation and maintenance.
• Correct vision, normal colour perception, hearing, and sense of smell.
• Valid driver’s licence with a satisfactory driving record and willingness to obtain the required Massachusetts licence and company qualification.
• Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical systems and the ability to learn advanced troubleshooting.
• History of safe working habits.
• Pass company‑approved EEI testing (CAST Test) and a physical aptitude exam covering tool identification, fusing/wiring, and lifting/carrying tasks.
• High‑school diploma or GED required; advanced education preferred.
• Preference for candidates who have completed an Eversource‑sponsored training program.
• Valid DOT medical certification or ability to obtain one within three months of hire.

• Ability and willingness to perform heavy physical work indoors and outdoors in all seasons for extended periods.
• Work in confined spaces and at heights up to 60 feet.
• Shift work required.

Starting Rate of Pay: $40.44 per hour. Over the three‑year apprenticeship a pay increase occurs at every qualifying level: $40.44 – 43.48 – 45.76 – 47.87 – 50.71 – 54.00 – 57.04 – 60.88.
