* ** Your role
** We are looking for a Producer, Television, to join CBC North’s television news team and lead the production of
* Northbeat*, an English language, 30-minute supper hour newscast for Yukon, NWT, and Nunavut, as well as supporting
* Igalaaq,
* an Inuktitut, 30-minute supper hour newscast for Nunavut. You are known for your creative storytelling skills, your journalistic rigour and your ability to lead and develop teams. You will be responsible for overseeing the production of
* Northbeat* and
* Igalaaq*, ensuring they are informative, engaging, and well-organized. You will work closely with reporters, hosts, and other staff to determine the content and structure of the broadcast. This involves selecting and prioritizing stories, coordinating live shots, scripting segments, and managing the show’s timing. Additionally, the producer collaborates with the control room to handle technical aspects, such as graphics and video feeds.
Your goal is to deliver accurate and compelling news that resonates with the audience while following CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices (JSP). You are an experienced and strong editorial leader who isn’t afraid to experiment and champion new, creative ways of doing things. You are open to new video storytelling treatments. You have very strong story development skills and are a leader focused on the audience and what they need.
You are invested in ensuring that our journalism reflects the communities that we serve and that our stories are informative, relevant, and engaging. You are connected to, or have an understanding of, Indigenous communities and their way of life and are passionate about telling original or under reported stories about those communities. You are a motivator, mentor and coach, capable of developing young journalists.
You are a team player, work well with others and lead with compassion and empathy. You set the standard for collaboration with other producers and content creators. You have a clear understanding of CBC‘s Journalistic Standards & Practices (JSP).
** Key Tasks:
*** Directs the television team and establishes the editorial plan for the shows each day and.
* Works with the regional assignment producers to discuss story treatments and deliverables for the day.
* Manages story development with reporters and VJs, and works with the host and lineup producer to refine focus, angles, and structure.
* Writes, vets, and reviews scripts, stories and question lines for the shows. Works with the host to support delivery and performance, brainstorm and develop special programming, series, etc.
* In collaboration with the TV lineup producer, determines the look, feel, style, pace, lineup and format of the program.
* Helps guide and support staff through change, supports team development and provides ongoing feedback.
* Is the editorial lead, with support from executive producers, for the journalism on the television programs.
** We are looking for a candidate with the following:
*** A university degree or an equivalent of education and experience, plus 5 years of practical and relevant experience in journalism, including broadcast news.
* Demonstrated experience leading a team or unit and proven ability to direct others.
* Demonstrated experience in video story development, including innovative programming ideas.
* Demonstrated experience with journalism ethics, vetting and fact checking the work of others and identifying legal implications of journalism.
* An ability to work effectively to multiple deadlines.
