Position Summary

Sea Mar Community Health Centers is recruiting a Health Educator I. The role focuses on providing quality health education to patients, delivering in-service education to Sea Mar staff, and establishing professional contacts with community groups and organizations to increase accessibility and availability of services. The educator works with clinic staff, maintains relations with physicians and other service professionals, and presents preventive health care information to the community.

Duties

and Responsibilities

  • Assessing health education needs of the target population and providing education in areas such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, stress management, positive parenting, weight management, smoking cessation, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS pre‑ and post‑test counseling, pregnancy options counseling, family planning, intrauterine devices, Depo Provera, bilateral tubal ligation, and vasectomy counseling.
  • Designing, promoting, presenting, and evaluating community group health sessions.
  • Developing collaborative relationships with local health, educational, and social service providers and agencies.
  • Attending staff meetings and in‑service trainings as scheduled.
  • Completing and submitting accurate weekly and/or monthly reports.
  • Reviewing and updating health education materials and creating pamphlets as needed.
  • Participating in the Literacy Review process for all health education materials.
  • Providing blood pressure screening for nursing home residents, when required.
  • Developing, maintaining, and harvesting fruits and vegetables from a community garden for distribution in patient settings.
  • Demonstrating knowledge and skills to provide age‑appropriate care to patients across the lifespan.
  • Charting notes in the Electronic Health Records (EHR) system.
Qualifications and Requirements

Education and Experience, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, and Medical Screening

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a BA/BS in Health Education, Public Health, Nursing, Education, Nutrition, or a related field, or a minimum of five (5) years of relevant health education experience.
  • Experience in patient counseling, small and large group education, and curriculum development.
  • Completion of a pre‑hire and annual tuberculosis screening.
  • Proof of annual influenza and COVID‑19 vaccination. Employees with approved medical or religious exemptions for the flu vaccine must wear a mask during the flu season; employees with a COVID‑19 exemption must wear a mask while on Sea Mar premises.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain certification within ninety (90) days of hire.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Proficiency in reading, interpreting, and writing routine reports and correspondence.
  • Strong mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division in various units).
  • Reasoning ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization and interpret instructions in various formats.
Conditions of Employment
  • Background check from DSHS and Washington State Patrol.
  • Valid Washington driver’s license and current auto insurance coverage.
  • No history or evidence of alcohol or other drug misuse for three (3) years immediately prior to employment, and no misuse during employment.

Physical Requirements
  • Regularly required to talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Required vision abilities include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
