Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is consistently among the top-ranked hospitals for orthopedics and rheumatology by U.S. News & World Report. This program provides consistent, immediate access for patients 12 years and older with an undiagnosed musculoskeletal injury or sudden onset of pain to be triaged and connected to the right subspecialized level of care.
Job Summary
The HSS Orthopedics Now program provides triage, diagnosis, treatment, and referral to higher levels of care as needed. The NP/PA sees patients autonomously, in collaboration with HSS physicians, and is licensed to practice primary, acute, and specialty healthcare services. The NP/PA diagnoses and treats acute musculoskeletal injuries, including but not limited to bone, joint, or muscle injuries; strains and sprains; dislocations and fractures;
joint pain; back and neck pain; osteoarthritis; pediatric injuries; sports injuries; injections and aspirations; and bracing and splinting.
Responsibilities
- Triages, diagnoses, treats, and refers patients as appropriate in an expedited timeframe.
- Collaborates with and is supported by HSS physicians; autonomously manages patient care within scope.
- Orders and interprets diagnostic studies; performs procedures such as injections, aspirations, splinting, and casting within scope.
Qualifications
Education – Required
- Bachelor’s degree
- Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies or Nursing
- Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited Physician Assistant Training Program
- Nurse Practitioner:
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and Master’s degree in Nursing
Certifications/Licensure – Required
- Physician Assistant: active New York license;
Current NCCPA certification; 100 hours CME every 2 years; recertification every 6–10 years;
Infection Control Certificate;
Child abuse recognition; ACLS and BLS; DEA license - Nurse Practitioner: active New York license;
Board certification (e.g., ANCC, AANP);
Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP); ACLS and BLS; DEA license
Experience – Required
- At least 2 years in musculoskeletal/orthopedic practice
- Experience with injections, aspirations, and casting
Experience – Preferred
- 1–2 years in outpatient or ambulatory settings
- Sports medicine and/or emergency medicine experience
Skills – Required
- Excellent verbal and written communication; strong customer service
- Critical thinking and professional expertise; updated on latest trends and treatments
- Time management and organization; adaptable to varying schedules
- Collaboration with clinical colleagues; develops and coordinates care plans
- Interpersonal skills; patient-record maintenance; thorough history and physical exams
- Evidence-based practice; commitment to best practices; ongoing professional development
- Promotes quality healthcare and demonstrates impact on clinical outcomes
- Engages in self-directed continuing education; participates in professional forums
Skills – Preferred
- Experience with electronic health records (EPIC) preferred
Working Conditions
Physical: continuous standing/walking or lifting 20–50 lbs; indoor environment with exposure to dust, fumes, noise; OSHA Category 1 hazards (exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues, and other potentially infectious materials).
