Overview

Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager or Clinical Coordinator, the Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive, patient-centered care across a diverse behavioral health population and may work various shifts in the following units:

• Adolescent Psychiatry
• General Adult
• Geriatric Psychiatry
• Mood Disorders
• Transitional Youth

• Supervise non-RN staff, coordinate patient care activities, and serve as a charge nurse when assigned, delegating and overseeing unit operations.
• Support multiple behavioral health units based on patient needs and staffing priorities, ensuring continuity and quality of care.
• Assess the patient’s physical and psychosocial condition on an ongoing basis throughout the continuum of care.
• Develop, communicate, and document a plan of care reflecting individualized patient problems and interventions to achieve desired outcomes, involving the patient, family, and healthcare team.
• Implement and coordinate this plan of care in collaboration with the healthcare team.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of the plan of care, patient response to care, and readiness for discharge. Revise the plan of care as needed and make referrals where indicated.
• Plan for education after assessing individual learning needs and readiness of the patient and family; provide educational opportunities and document outcomes.
• Serve as a preceptor to new staff.
• Fulfill charge nurse duties as required.
• Meet performance expectations for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, staff and self-development as outlined in performance review.
• Perform other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit.
• Demonstrate competency in the care of neuro patients.
• Demonstrate skill and knowledge in neuro assessment.
• Demonstrate skill and knowledge in airway management of neuro patients.
• Demonstrate skill and understanding in caring for a trached patient.
• Assist the physician and care for the patient during special neuro procedures.
• Show knowledge and understanding of the TIA teaching program.
• Perform pharyngeal, endotracheal, and tracheostomy suctioning according to established policy and procedure.
• Use equipment and care patients in a halo brace.
• Provide nursing responsibilities and interventions for patients on a ventilator.

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred.
• Proficient in use of computer software, including electronic patient records.
• Must have ability to use the internet for literature searches regarding care for patients.
• Valid state of Connecticut Registered Nurse license.

• BLS required.
