The Maine Forestry Museum seeks a community-minded Executive Director to lead the organization into its next chapter. This new position has the potential to evolve and develop as an essential leadership role for someone who is passionate about forestry heritage, outdoor culture, and rural community engagement. The Executive Director serves as the museum’s primary steward, overseeing operations, fundraising, collections, facilities, and public outreach while advancing the mission to preserve and share Maine’s forestry and conservation history.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead annual fundraising efforts, including memberships, donor cultivation, sponsor ships, writing grants, advertising, marketing and events.
  • Build strong relationships with supporters, local businesses, foundations, and community partners.
  • Oversee communications including newsletters, social media, press releases, printed materials, and website updates.
Collections, Exhibits & Facilities
  • Ensure responsible care, documentation, and preservation of artifacts, museum collections, and forestry tools/equipment.
  • Maintain and develop accurate and creative exhibits.
Operations & Administration
  • Manage the museum store budget in partnership with the Board Treasurer; maintain transparent financial practices.
  • Manage daily museum operations, including staff and office systems, visitor services, admissions, and inventory.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise volunteers, docents and seasonal staff.
  • Support Board governance through reports, meetings, and strategic planning.
Education & Partnerships
  • Create and deliver educational programs for visitors, schools, and community groups.
  • Build and maintain collaborative partnerships with Maine’s Forest Industry.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, social media skills, donor relations, and grant writing.
  • Experience in some aspect of nonprofit management, museum operations, heritage interpretation, natural resources, or related fields.
  • Proven organizational and operational management abilities.
  • Enthusiasm for forestry history, conservation, and the Rangeley region.
  • Experience with collections management, artifact cataloging, and exhibit development.
  • Experience managing volunteers or seasonal staff.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit finances, Quick Books, and membership databases.
Working Conditions
  • This new, part time position will vary seasonally from 15-30 hours per week.
  • Greater time commitment in the months from May-September.
Compensation
  • Salary range, $35k-$45k, is commensurate with experience and competitive for small rural museums in Maine.
