Position Title: Mathematics Specialist
Location: Cheltenham Elementary School
Reports To: Principal and Supervisor of Elementary Curriculum and Instruction
Terms: 10 month, 190 days as per CEA Collective Bargaining Agreement

Position SummaryThe Math Specialist is an instructional leader focused on enhancing mathematics education across all grade levels. This position involves providing intensive support to students struggling with mathematical concepts, coaching teachers on effective instructional strategies, and collaborating with school leadership to strengthen the school's overall math program. The specialist will use diagnostic data to drive instruction, implement research-based interventions, and foster a problem-solving culture that helps all students achieve mathematical proficiency.
Key Responsibilities- Direct Student Intervention:
- Conduct diagnostic math assessments to identify specific areas of student conceptual misunderstanding and skill deficits.
- Deliver targeted, small-group, and one-on-one math interventions using concrete, pictorial, and abstract methods.
- Regularly assess student growth and adjust instructional strategies to meet evolving needs.
- Teacher Collaboration and Support:
- Serve as an expert resource for math instruction, offering guidance and support to classroom teachers.
- Co-plan lessons with teachers to integrate effective math practices and problem-solving strategies.
- Model high-quality math instruction in various classroom settings.
- Data Analysis and Program Oversight:
- Analyze school-wide and classroom-level math data to identify areas for instructional improvement.
- Provide support to teachers in using data to differentiate instruction and inform small-group placements.
- Contribute to the selection and evaluation of math curricula, materials, and intervention programs.
- Professional Development:
- Plan and lead professional development opportunities for teachers focused on topics such as number sense, conceptual understanding, and engaging instructional tasks.
- Stay current on research and best practices in math education.
- Parent and Community Engagement:
- Collaborate with parents to provide resources and strategies for supporting mathematical learning at home.
- Communicate student progress in math to families.
- Acting as an Instructional Coach: Building the capacity of classroom teachers by providing targeted feedback, sharing innovative teaching methods, and modeling high-leverage instructional strategies.
- Spearheading Professional Learning: Designing and facilitating professional development that elevates teachers' content knowledge and pedagogical skills in mathematics, moving beyond procedural memorization to deep conceptual understanding.
- Championing School-wide Initiatives: Working closely with the administrative team to ensure alignment of math curriculum, instruction, and assessments across all grade levels and to implement a consistent vision for what quality math instruction looks like.
- Cultivating a Positive Math Identity: Helping to shift mindsets about mathematics from a subject of memorization to one of critical thinking and creative problem-solving for both students and staff.
- Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, Mathematics, or a closely related field.
- Valid Pennsylvania State Teaching Certification.
- Preferred:
- Valid Math Specialist Endorsement/Certification or a Master's degree in Mathematics Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or Educational Leadership.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of successful classroom teaching experience with a proven track record of improving student literacy outcomes.
