Position: Act 86 Substitute Teacher

Act 86 Substitute Teacher

In order to participate in the Prospective Substitute Teacher Program (PA Act 86), you must be currently enrolled in a teacher preparation program at a college or university located in Pennsylvania. You must also have completed 60 semester hours or more. Participants may work a maximum of 20 days in a school year, and no more than 10 consecutive days for the same teacher.

Renewal of permit is allowed for one additional year.

Position Summary

A substitute teacher is an individual who, in the absence of the classroom teacher, is responsible for providing instruction and managing the learning environment. The substitute teacher reports to the principal or designee at the location to which they are assigned.

Job Duties

Day‑to‑day job duties of a substitute teacher are determined by the classroom teacher or their designee and may vary depending on the changing needs of the classroom(s), student(s), and/or school district. Substitute teachers of any capacity are subject to daily reassignment, depending on the needs of the day. The substitute teacher must comply with the duties outlined by the classroom teacher, principal or designee.

Qualifications

  • Proof of enrollment in an accredited college or university and teacher preparation program
  • Proof of 60 earned credit hours, including current enrollment status
  • Clean Pennsylvania Criminal Records check (Act 34) less than 1 year old
  • Clean Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance History (Act 151) less than 1 year old
  • Clean FBI Criminal History Record less than 1 year old
  • Child Mandated Reporter Training 3 Hours (Act 126) less than 5 years old
  • Valid TB test or chest X‑ray less than 90 days old
  • Two valid forms of identification for I‑9 verification
  • Valid, working personal email address (not a college or university address)
  • Contact information for all current and past employers where there has been direct contact with children
Essential Function

Substitute teaching is an essential part of the educational process. Each school year all districts will look to build a workforce of substitute teachers to aid teachers and ensure continuity in the absence of a teacher. The substitute teacher must continue the primary teacher’s lesson plan so that the curriculum plan at hand continues to be carried out.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Reports to the office upon arrival for check‑in and reviews the plans and schedules for the day
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about school personnel
  • Assumes responsibility for overseeing student behavior in the classroom, during lunch, activity periods and out‑of‑class settings
  • Executes instructional activities with individual students or small groups following the absent teacher’s lesson plan
  • Provides instruction to special needs children who are part of the classroom dynamic
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Proficient in maintaining efficient classroom management skills
  • Conducts themselves in a polite and professional manner with other staff members and building administrators
  • Other duties may be required that are not enumerated here but are part of the classroom teacher’s curriculum or duties
