Speech And Language Pathologist

The Speech and Language Pathologist assists in developing speech and language skills to facilitate the personal, social and intellectual development of students. In order to respond to the individual needs and abilities of students, the Speech and Language Pathologist must work closely with the staff and administration of the Cooperative and School District.

Primary duties and responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in developing speech and language skills to facilitate the personal, social and intellectual development of students.
  • Establishing a positive learning environment and responding to the individual needs of students.
  • Ensuring that all activities conform to District and Cooperative guidelines.
  • Communicating effectively with all members of the School District, Cooperative and the community.
  • Working effectively with community organizations.
  • Appropriately operating all equipment as required.
  • Reacting to changes in a professional and productive manner and completing other tasks as assigned.
  • Supporting the value of an education.
  • Supporting the philosophy and vision of the School District and the Cooperative.
  • Supervising pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  • Assisting in the early recognition and prevention of educational problems.
  • Monitoring student progress and making informed, timely educational decisions.
  • Conducting speech, language and hearing screenings and diagnostic evaluations to determine the need for clinical services.
  • Participating as a team member in the comprehensive evaluation, review and re-evaluation process.
  • Participating in the development of student IEPs.
  • Adhering to required program guidelines as defined by the School District of the City of York's plan for Special Education.
  • Consulting with teachers, administrators, parents and others concerning the needs of students and special services that are available.
  • Assisting teachers in the development and implementation of curriculum modifications and appropriate classroom strategies.
  • Referring students and their families to appropriate community agencies and services.
  • Cooperating with agencies serving students and families.
  • Providing therapy, follow-up and/or consultation based on student's IEPs.
  • Motivating students through effective communication and evaluative feedback.
  • Demonstrating awareness of the needs of students and providing for individual differences.
  • Setting high expectations for student achievement and behavior.
  • Demonstrating effective and professional interpersonal relationships with others.
  • Establishing and maintaining a positive climate for learning through appropriate classroom management.
  • Planning and implementing transitional programs for students.
  • Assisting students in developing feelings of self-worth and in making social adjustments that permit them to cope with disabilities.
  • Maintaining appropriate confidential records and providing timely reports.
  • Ordering and maintaining an adequate inventory of materials and supplies.
  • Training staff members as assigned.
  • Assisting with public awareness activities that lead to a better understanding of the needs of exceptional children.
  • Staying abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques in the speech and language pathology profession.
  • Ensuring that School District policies and that of the Cooperative are observed during all activities.
  • Obtaining advance approval for all special activities and expenditures.
  • Adhering to all District and Cooperative health and safety policies.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Special Education.
