About the Department:
The Public Works Department is comprised of eight divisions that fall under the direction of the Public Works Director and Assistant Director. Of those eight divisions, Road Maintenance maintains county roads. We believe that by working together, we become empowered and are able to meet the goals set for our department.

About our opportunity

We invite you to apply to join our team as a full-time (40 hours per week), non-exempt Lead Heavy Equipment Operator (Crew Leader) with the Public Works Department, Road Maintenance division.

The purpose of this position is to operate and supervise the operation of a variety of heavy equipment; to maintain and perform minor repairs on equipment and machinery, and to perform related work as required. The scope of this position is to assist in supervising and performing a variety of road construction and maintenance tasks using heavy equipment and machinery, including but not limited to grading and paving roads and parking lots, scraping roads, constructing and repairing bridges, constructing barricades, patching roads, installing asphalt, placing stone, landscaping, etc.

Asphalt experience is a plus!

Work Schedule: 7:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday through Thursday. May be required to work occasional overtime to meet productivity demands.
Projected Salary Range/Pay Grade 113: $22.49 - $26.00 per hour. Salary is determined based on qualifications.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Assists in supervising and performs a variety of maintenance tasks using vehicles, heavy equipment and machinery, including but not limited to grading and paving roads and parking lots, scraping roads, constructing and repairing bridges, constructing barricades, constructing convenience centers for garbage disposal, patching roads, mending fences, constructing and repairing sidewalks, installing asphalt or concrete, placing stone, landscaping, sowing grass and mowing grass on rights-of-way, cutting and removing trees and debris from rights-of-way, installing road signs, digging ditches, laying drainage pipes, hauling waste, etc.
  • Assists in supervising and operates a variety of light and heavy equipment, commercial vehicles/truck and hand tools; exercises care and safety in the use and maintenance of assigned equipment and tools; operates two-way radio.
  • Operates heavy vehicles and equipment to load, haul or move materials, dirt and debris; drives a truck to transport heavy equipment from site to site as well as materials and tools. Ability to drive county vehicles required to perform this essential task.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, cleaning and minor repairs of equipment, machinery and tools; inspects equipment regularly for proper and safe operating condition.
