The Fire Inspector is responsible for enforcing the Fire Code and related Municipal Ordinances adopted by the City of Youngstown. The role includes developing and conducting a fire education program for citizens and business owners within city boundaries, managing a fire damage and escrow program for fire‑damaged structures, and improving public safety standards. The Fire Inspector ensures compliance with fire prevention laws, ordinances, and accepted standards through the inspection of commercial buildings under their jurisdiction, works with city businesses and other entities to conduct inspections, investigates complaints, holds fire drills, supports schools and businesses, issues permits, maintains records, and assists state or federal agencies with code enforcement.

Examples

of Duties
  • Inspect all commercial structures falling under jurisdiction per the adopted codes and ordinances.
  • Ensure acceptance and compliance of all covered systems and appliances in these buildings.
  • Investigate any complaints of noncompliance to adopted codes, including overcrowding, illegal storage, or burning complaints.
  • Conduct fire drills and fire safety programs as requested by schools or businesses in the city.
  • Assist agency, state, or federal agencies with enforcement of codes and standards within jurisdiction.
  • Issue permits necessary for fire safety of the community.
  • Maintain all records of inspections and permits for the period required by the city’s law department.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Hold and maintain a current certification from the State of Ohio as a Certified Fire Safety Inspector or obtain it within six (6) months of hire.
  • Hold and maintain a current State of Ohio Level 2 Firefighter Certification.
  • Have comprehensive knowledge of fire prevention codes, standards, laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations enforced by the City of Youngstown and of inspection practices and documentation.
  • Ability to recognize and define fire hazards and recommend remediation.
  • Ability to carry out instructions.
