Summary Of Job Responsibilities

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the reprocessing of reusable instruments and equipment in the Sterile Processing department of St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center. Responsibilities include the cleaning, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of reusables; completing the OR case carts; maintaining appropriate Infection Control and JCAHO standards in the work area; and working under the direction of the Lead Surgical Tech, Surgery Coordinator, and Perioperative Nurse Manager.

Qualifications
  • Must possess CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) certificate or obtain within one year of hire.
Education
  • High School Diploma required.
Experience
  • Prior Central Service or Surgery experience preferred.

Principal Job Accountabilities
  • Assures the maintenance of adequate stock on hand.
  • Monitors inventory levels to maintain targeted turnover rates and customer fill‑rates.
  • Coordinates with the inventory coordinator for replenishment of needed items.
  • Avoids excessive buildup of stock.
  • Maintains a neat, clean work environment through all processing areas; maintains neat and accurate files.
  • Ensures requisitions are processed accurately and timely.
  • Ensures proper organization, location, rotation and identification of reusable supplies.
  • Assures that proper entries are made on stock issues, receipts, and returns to maintain an accurate perpetual inventory.
  • Completes the sterile reprocessing of surgical instrumentation and linen packs.
  • Follows procedures and standards for preparing and handling sterile items.
  • Demonstrates appropriate procedures such as the use of sterilizers and setting up surgical and/or treatment trays.
  • Ensures that aseptic techniques are employed in the preparation and handling of sterile supplies.
  • Adheres to departmental dress code, particularly in the decontamination area.
  • Assists with orientation and in‑service training for all sterile supply personnel.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of sterilization logs and bacteriological indicators; assures accurate productivity and quality record keeping.
  • Works closely with the operating room and other ancillary areas on tray set‑ups.
  • Ensures that OR case gathering is performed accurately and timely.
  • Assures that patient care equipment is cleaned and set up appropriately.
  • Communicates with Surgery in a courteous and efficient manner regarding stat case carts, requests for additional instrumentation and problems.
  • Provides appropriate and timely follow‑up to questions regarding the status of a particular item.
  • Informs the manager of shortages in supplies used for processing instruments and equipment.
  • Works with manager to solve problems and improve the work environment.
  • Must adhere to the hospital policy for maintaining confidentiality; uses a PC to access surgery schedule and to generate surgical case cart pick list; maintains confidentiality of surgical patient information.
Job Accountabilities – Other
  • Participates in educational programs, in‑services and seminars as assigned; attends meetings as required.
  • Performs all related tasks and duties as assigned by the manager or designate.
SHIFT/SCHEDULE

Full Time - Scheduled for 32 weekly hours. This position works all shifts and has scheduled shifts every other weekend.
