Summary Of Primary FunctionThe Obstetrics (OB) Registered Nurse (RN) provides care in women’s, newborn, and family-centered contexts and may care for individuals who do not self-identify as women or exclusively as women. The OB RN plans, coordinates and evaluates nursing care, supervising licensed and unlicensed staff within established procedures and policies. This role supports patients in outpatient and/or acute obstetrical settings as part of an interprofessional team to achieve optimal maternal, neonatal, gynecological and population outcomes.
EssentialJob Functions
- In collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team, conducts initial and ongoing patient assessments, analyzes data, educates patients/families, implements nursing care/interventions, evaluates effectiveness, and advocates for the patient/family.
- Provides episodic (outpatient) and inpatient (on designated units) obstetrical/women’s health nursing care where applicable.
- Administers medications safely in accordance with state practice and coordinates care within hospital departments.
- Acts as a patient safety advocate by participating in ongoing quality improvement in the department.
- Applies knowledge of contemporary obstetrical/women’s health nursing practice and future innovations.
- Applies the nursing process in the care of women during pregnancy, birth, postpartum, gynecological and other women’s health issues and the neonate from birth until discharge with various gestational ages, diagnoses and complications.
- Provides care to women requiring triage, prioritization, assessment, education, stabilization, resuscitation and emergency management.
- Models core cultural and safety behaviors to prevent harm and ensure a safe high-quality experience of care.
- Practices in accordance with the BSMH Nursing Professional Practice Model.
- Current RN license in the state of practice or eligible by compact (required).
- BLS (preferred at hire; must obtain before direct patient care). ACLS acceptable in lieu of BLS.
- NRP (preferred at hire; must obtain within 3 months of hire).
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification (preferred if interpreting fetal monitoring).
- Inpatient OB Certification (preferred).
- Maternal Newborn Nursing Certification (preferred).
- Neonatal Intensive Care Certification (required for critical care transport NICU teams within 2 years of hire).
- Low Risk Neonatal Nursing Certification (preferred).
- Care of the Extremely Low Birth Weight Neonate Certification (preferred).
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred).
Work Experience- 1 year of RN experience (required).
- Recent OB, ED or critical care experience (preferred).
Epic Electronic Health Record (EHR) (preferred).
Skills- Assigns patient care according to nursing skills, knowledge and scope of practice.
- Educates and mentors nursing staff; supports quality improvement indicators.
- Provides evidence-based care aligned with current standards and organization mission.
- Performs comprehensive assessment of clinical condition and psychosocial needs; elaborates and revises plan of care.
- Ensures patient safety and effective communication with patients, families and care teams.
- Applies cultural diversity and inclusion principles in patient care.
- Demonstrates professionalism, accountability and stewardship of resources.
- Maintains composure and effective performance in emergencies; supports mother/fetal dyad care.
- Competent in electronic fetal monitoring and related obstetric care tasks; supports breastfeeding and discharge planning.
- Communicates with patients in understandable terms and recognizes family dynamics.
- Applies age- and department-specific emergency and life-saving equipment knowledge.
- Provides advanced care management for unstable, acute or chronically ill neonates as applicable.
