PositionThe Registered Nurse Medical/Surgical functions as a care provider within a multidisciplinary care team, delivering patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation. The RN demonstrates knowledge of patient age and cultural diversity in care provision, manages time effectively, contributes to quality improvement, collaborates with other professional disciplines, and supports the mission of the ministry to provide physical and psychological support to patients and families.
ShiftFull-time evening/night shift: 7:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.
Essential Job Functions- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to establish goals and strategies for discharge or ongoing care needs.
- Perform and document complete patient assessments and maintain current nursing care plans for all assigned patients.
- Identify patient learning needs to provide individualized and comprehensive teaching.
- Administer medications safely in accordance with state practice and Mercy Health policies and procedures.
- Serve as a point of contact for patient care coordination across hospital departments.
- Act as a patient safety advocate by participating in ongoing quality improvement and collaborate with spiritual care, palliative care, and ethics as needed.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor, subject to reasonable accommodation.
- Current RN license in the state of practice or covered by a compact license (required).
- BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire; must obtain from an approved source prior to direct patient care).
- ACLS acceptable in lieu of BLS.
- RN-BC (Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification) – preferred.
- CCRn, PCCN, CMSRN, NIH Stroke Certification – preferred.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing – preferred.
- One year of RN experience required; new grads and nurses with less than 1 year experience will be considered.
- Six months RN experience in an acute care hospital setting – preferred.
- Assigns patient care according to staff nursing skills, knowledge, and scope of practice.
- Educates nursing staff and others as part of quality improvement indicators and outcomes.
- Maintains clinical knowledge and competencies to provide evidence-based care.
- Performs comprehensive assessments of clinical condition and psychosocial needs.
- Develops, implements and prioritizes care plans; applies the nursing process to patient care delivery.
- Evaluates treatment effectiveness and revises care plans accordingly.
- Collaborates with patients and families to cope with illness; coordinates care with other team members.
- Exhibits strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Applies cultural diversity and inclusion principles in care.
- Recognizes limitations and seeks assistance when needed; pursues professional growth through education and literature.
- Acts with professionalism and accountability; practices cost awareness and resource stewardship; maintains self-care and resilience; protects patient safety and privacy; utilizes office and clinical technologies.
Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads; potential exposure to physical altercations, verbal abuse, high noise levels, bright lights, hazardous substances or body fluids; possible use of physical restraints; interruptions and periods of working alone.
Physical RequirementsTypical lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, balance, bending, standing and walking requirements; include activities related to patient handling and dexterity; exposure to chemicals, biological hazards, electrical energy and other risks consistent with hospital settings.
