Summary of Primary Function / General Purpose of Position

The Registered Nurse Medical/Surgical functions as a care provider of a multidisciplinary care team responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN possesses basic knowledge of a patient’s age and cultural diversity, demonstrates strong skills related to effective time management and prioritizing patient care, contributes to the provision of quality nursing care through performance improvement initiatives, collaborates with other professional disciplines, and supports the mission of the ministry to provide physical and psychological support to patients and families.

Job Functions
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to establish goals and strategies for meeting patient discharge or continuing care needs.
  • Perform and document complete patient assessments; initiate and maintain current nursing care plans for all assigned patients.
  • Identify patient learning needs and provide individualized and comprehensive teaching.
  • Administer medications safely in accordance with State of Practice and Bon Secours Mercy Health policies.
  • Serve as point of contact for patients’ care coordination throughout hospital departments.
  • Advocate for patient safety by participating in ongoing quality improvement within the department.
  • Collaborate with spiritual care, palliative care, and ethics teams to serve as patient advocate.
Licensing / Certification
  • Current RN license in the state of employment or covered by compact (required)
  • BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire; must be obtained from an approved source prior to direct patient care; ACLS acceptable in lieu of BLS)
  • Medical‑Surgical Nursing Certification RN‑BC (preferred)
  • CCRN Critical Care Registered Nurse (preferred)
  • PCCN Progressive Care Certified Nurse (preferred)
  • CMSRN Certified Medical‑Surgical Registered Nurse (preferred)
  • NIH Stroke Certification (preferred)
Education

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred).

Experience
  • One year of RN experience (required); will consider new graduates and RN’s with less than one year experience.
  • Six months RN experience in an acute care hospital setting (preferred).
Skills
  • Assign patient care according to nursing skill, knowledge and scope of practice of staff.
  • Orient, facilitate learning experience and provide education based on quality improvement indicators, outcomes and implementation to nursing staff and others.
  • Possess clinical knowledge, skills and competency to provide evidence‑based patient care in accordance with current standards of practice, policy and procedure, and BSMH mission.
  • Perform comprehensive assessment of patient’s clinical condition and psychosocial needs, and supportive resources.
  • Safely and efficiently develop, implement and prioritize plan of care.
  • Apply the nursing process in patient care delivery.
  • Assess patient’s physical and emotional responses to treatment to evaluate effectiveness of intervention and patient outcomes; revise plan of care accordingly.
  • Assist patient and family in coping with patient’s illness.
  • Collaborate with others in the delivery of coordinated patient care.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills.
  • Apply cultural diversity and inclusion principles when caring for patients and their support resources.
  • Recognize own limitations and seek assistance to perform safely.
  • Advance personal and professional growth through participation in educational programs, current literature, in‑services and workshops.
