Overview

Police Officer — St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital
This is a PRN "As Needed" Position
Reports to: Supervisor, Manager, Director of Protective Services

Number of Direct Reports: 0

Responsibilities
  • Provides internal and external safety/police functions to support the safety of BSMH facilities, including participation in investigations and arrests when warranted.
  • Assigned to an area and responds to radio and/or telephone calls for routine and/or emergency assistance.
  • Protects patients, visitors and employees by providing escorts, patrolling grounds, and mitigating environment of care safety hazards.
  • Deters criminal activity through routine patrols of hospital property, including all parking lots and decks.
  • Enforces policies (e.g., parking regulations, visitation policies, drug enforcement, tobacco-free/smoking policy).
  • Monitors hospital activity on closed-circuit television to identify escalating situations requiring protective services involvement.
  • Intervenes in patient, visitor and staff confrontations as appropriate.
  • Documents duties performed, including completion of daily activity logs and incident reports.
  • Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures, alarm response, evacuation and internal/external disaster plans; responds to emergency situations and hospital alarms as designated.
  • Completes mandatory education and training to maintain organization/department competencies; maintains applicable certification/licensure.
  • Remains on assigned post and completes post-specific duties; ensures posts and patrol vehicles are clean and free of non-work-related material.
  • Follows organizational policies and procedures with emphasis on attendance, punctuality, confidentiality, dress code and display of , and safety.
  • Maintains and presents self in a professional manner when on duty.
  • Provides law enforcement/police services for facilities, including responding to emergencies, making arrests when necessary, conducting investigations, enforcing laws, managing property and evidence, and assisting in de-escalating potentially volatile situations.
  • Takes reports of vehicular accidents, criminal offenses and suspicious activity.
  • Maintains proficiency with all issued equipment, including firearms, electrical conducted weapon, pepper gel, and baton.
Licensing/Certification
  • Valid driver’s license (required)
  • BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (required within 6 months of hire)
  • Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy Certification (required within 6 months of hire)
Education
  • High school diploma or GED (required)
  • Associate's degree (preferred)
Work Experience

1-3 years of security, law enforcement, or military experience (preferred)

Training
  • Non-violent crisis intervention training (required within 6 months of hire)
  • Firearms qualifications; successfully pass bi-annual firearms qualifications
Patient Population
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development principles and the ability to assess data reflective of patient status to identify age-specific requirements; provides care per departmental policies.
  • Neonates (0-4 weeks);
    Infants (1-12 months);
    Pediatrics (1-12 years);
    Adolescents (13-17 years);
    Adults (18-64 years);
    Geriatrics (65 years and older).
Working Conditions
  • Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur.
  • Long-distance or air travel as needed, not to exceed 10% travel.
  • General office environment with potential exposure to high noise levels and bright lights.
  • May be exposed to physical altercations, verbal abuse, hazardous substances, or body fluids.
  • May be required to use physical restraints or to travel to off-site locations in adverse weather conditions.
  • Prolonged periods of working alone; periods of constant interruptions.
  • Other: universal precautions and infection control policies apply where applicable.
Skills
  • Hard/Tech/Clinical Skills
