Ypsilanti Community High School is seeking an innovative, passionate, and industry-experienced Career and Technical Education (CTE) Barbering Teacher Assistant to support our growing Barbering Program. This position provides students with hands-on, industry-aligned learning experiences that prepare them for successful careers in barbering, entrepreneurship, customer service, and the beauty industry. The ideal candidate is a skilled barbering professional who is committed to student success, workforce development, and creating engaging learning experiences that connect classroom instruction with real-world career opportunities.
GeneralStatement of the Position
Under the supervision of the Building Principal, CTE Administrator, and Barbering Instructor, the CTE Barbering Teacher Assistant supports the delivery of high-quality instruction that prepares students for careers in the barbering and grooming industry. The Teacher Assistant assists with classroom and laboratory instruction, supervises students in educational settings, maintains a safe and industry-standard learning environment, and supports the development of students' technical, academic, employability, and entrepreneurial skills.
The Teacher Assistant also supports program operations, including laboratory safety, equipment maintenance, inventory management, industry partnerships, and work-based learning opportunities. This position collaborates with staff, families, industry partners, and community stakeholders to ensure students are prepared for postsecondary education, industry certification, and employment opportunities within the barbering profession.
- Instruction and Curriculum Support
- Assist the Barbering Instructor with classroom, laboratory, and hands-on instruction in barbering techniques and procedures.
- Support instruction in haircutting, shaving, styling, sanitation, safety, customer service, professional ethics, business operations, and entrepreneurship.
- Assist with differentiating instruction to meet diverse student learning needs.
- Reinforce employability skills, workplace readiness, and career exploration activities.
- Utilize instructional technologies and strategies that enhance student engagement and achievement.
- Provide individual and small-group support during classroom and laboratory activities.
- Student Learning and Assessment
- Assist with monitoring student progress and performance.
- Support the administration of formative and summative assessments.
- Provide timely feedback and encouragement to students.
- Assist with implementing intervention and support strategies that promote student success.
- Support students in completing required competencies, practical experiences, and technical skill assessments necessary for eligibility to sit for the Michigan State Board of Barber Examiners licensing examination.
- Program Operations
- Maintain a safe, clean, and industry-standard barbering laboratory environment.
- Ensure compliance with safety, sanitation, district, state, and federal regulations.
- Assist with inventory management, equipment maintenance, supplies, and instructional materials.
- Supervise students during classroom instruction, laboratory experiences, and work-based learning activities.
- Assist with coordinating student participation in Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs), competitions, and industry events.
- Support partnerships with local barbershops, businesses, and industry professionals.
- Student Support and School Climate
- Support students in developing academic skills, professionalism, employability skills, and workplace readiness.
- Assist with student behavior management to maintain a safe and productive learning environment.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom climate.
- Monitor students in various educational settings to ensure safety and engagement.
- Collaboration and Communication
- Collaborate with school staff, administrators, counselors, industry partners, and community organizations.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with students, families, and community stakeholders.
- Participate in professional development, staff meetings, CTE initiatives, and school improvement efforts.
- Communicate with families regarding student progress and program expectations as directed.
- Assist with student recruitment, program promotion, and community outreach activities.
Valid Michigan Barber License. Ability to obtain a Michigan Barber Instructor License, if required by program needs. Recent and relevant barbering industry experience. Demonstrated knowledge of barbering techniques, sanitation practices, safety procedures, customer service, and industry standards. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
