A stationary engineer position supporting a district energy plant (steam, gas turbine, duct burner and HRSG) at Eastern Michigan University site. Operate and maintain boilers, pumps and other ancillary equipment, including preventative and corrective maintenance and repair on stationary engines and mechanical equipment. Through teamwork, you will ensure overall plant compliance with applicable safety, environmental and operational permits or guidelines.
Responsibilities- A licensed stationary engineer operating and maintaining boilers, chillers, cooling towers, evaporative coolers, ice water storage, pumps, fans, RO systems, water softeners, switch gear, MCC, feed water pumps, condensate system, steam induction pumps, isolation and control valves, a DCS human machine interface (HMI), diesel pumps, tanks, generators, air compressors, water lab testing, and willing to safely handle chemicals.
- Assists in controlling chilled water, steam, condensate, and cooling tower process parameters
- Responsible for reading various meters, gauges and automatic recording devices at specified intervals to verify proper operating condition of gas turbine generators, boilers and other equipment. Operate and maintain monitoring, control and instrumentation computers to include the SCADA and Shed Systems.
- Maintain daily operational records such as writing detailed entries in the daily log book, temperatures of equipment, hours of operation, fuel consumed, electrical loads, temperatures and pressures of condensate, boiler feed water and flue gases, as well as fluid levels in steam drums, deaerators, condensate tanks, RO System, gas compressors and any other related information when it comes to operation of the Energy Center.
- Fire and maintain prescribed operating ranges of gas turbines, boilers and other equipment by adjusting manual controls, overriding automatic controls, starting auxiliary equipment and/or shutting down equipment.
- Report any damage, malfunction, irregularities, and/or potential hazards in the building, grounds, equipment, vehicles or supplies to the supervisor.
- Perform water analysis tests and add chemical additives as necessary
- Monitor and operate 13.2kV switch gear through automatically synchronizing the generator to the bus by means of the SCADA or HMI controls.
- Take corrective action, as required, to alarms on boilers, turbines, generators, switch gear, pumps, tanks, compressors or any other equipment within the Energy Center. Maintain all inventory of any materials or chemical for plant operation.
- Maintain cleanliness of all work and storage areas, tools, vehicles, and equipment used in the performance of your duties.
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance such as lubrication, painting and repair of boilers, motors, pumps, valves and other equipment.
- Completes maintenance work orders utilizing a computerized maintenance management system.
- Read and interpret blueprints, Standard operating procedures, flow diagrams, sketches, and job specifications.
- Perform all operational related departmental duties, as required or otherwise assigned by your supervisor.
- Lead, oversee, and assist with the work and instruction of apprentices and other support staff.
- Expected to report and work during natural disasters and other emergencies.
- Available to work overtime as required.
- Self-motivated and proactive to ensure safe, reliable, efficient plant operation
- Ability to lead by example and create a harmonious working environment working with various individuals
- Must have strong communication skills both written and verbal, must be able to complete all documentation in a neat and timely manner
- Ability to take directions from supervisor to perform any duties necessary in the operation of the Energy Center.
- Possession of the current City of Detroit Third Class Stationary Engineer's License; equivalent license for operation of boilers of at least 7,500 square feet of heating surface and turbines of at least 100 HP.
- 7+ years of experience with boilers, chillers, or plant operations environment
- Minimum education is a high school diploma or GED
- Within the last six years, four years of directly related experience in the assigned field at the person's level is necessary.
