The school nurse strengthens and facilitates the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children. The major focus of school nursing services is the prevention of illness and disability, and the early detection and correction of health problems. The school nurse is uniquely qualified in preventive health, health assessment, and referral procedure and supports the education process by working to assure the health of the students.
Essential duties and responsibilities include performing necessary medical procedures on students, training school personnel to perform health-related procedures, assessing student health needs, developing policies for the school health program, monitoring compliance with laws and regulations, participating in multidisciplinary teams, collaborating with child-support agencies, working as a liaison between staff, parents, students, and physicians, coordinating health screening activities, developing nursing care plans, administering medications, providing first aid care, maintaining security of health supplies, serving as a resource person on health issues, providing staff development on health-related topics, conducting home and local-based school visits, corresponding with parents on health needs, recording immunizations and health data, reporting communicable diseases, evaluating students and staff for wellness or sickness, coordinating First Aid and CPR training for staff, maintaining medical supply inventory, billing for Medicaid, participating in maturation classes, seeking opportunities for professional growth, attending staff meetings, adhering to policies and procedures, and maintaining regular attendance.
