The school nurse strengthens and facilitates the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children. The major focus of school nursing services is the prevention of illness and disability, and the early detection and correction of health problems. The school nurse is uniquely qualified in preventive health, health assessment, and referral procedure and supports the education process by working to assure the health of the students.

Essential duties and responsibilities include performing necessary medical procedures on students, assessing student health needs and administering or delegating health-related tasks, participating as an active member of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with other child-support agencies in designing and providing a school health program, working as a liaison between staff, parents, students, and physicians as it relates to medical issues, coordinating vision, hearing, and other health screening activities, developing nursing care plans and health care plans for students, consulting with out-center programs regarding medical concerns, administering, recording, and monitoring medications for students, providing first aid care and medically prescribed services, maintaining security of school health supplies, serving as a resource person on health issues, providing follow-up evaluations on students as required, recommending corrective action where problems are identified in conjunction with the building administrator, conducting home and local-based school visits when appropriate, corresponding with parents on the health needs of children in conjunction with the building administrator, recording immunizations, health findings, and other relevant health data, reporting all appropriate communicable diseases to the Health Department, providing families with communications that are related to identifying cases of communicable diseases discovered in the school building, evaluating students and staff for wellness or sickness, maintaining and inventorying necessary medical supplies, Medicaid billing, seeking regular opportunities for professional growth, attending regularly scheduled staff meetings, adhering to YCS policies and procedures, adhering to professional, ethical, and legal standards of practice, providing clinical educational opportunities for students of nursing, and having regular and predictable attendance.
