Position SummaryInspect, plan and coordinate the installation, repair and preventative maintenance of refrigeration equipment and HVAC systems. This position complies with all applicable department policies, procedures, MIOSHA standards, and laws while performing required duties. The role instructs and supervises skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled prisoners in executing these tasks, develops material orders and specifications, monitors material inventories, processes and monitors work requests and preventive maintenance database entries.
Ninety percent of duties are performed within the secure perimeter of the facility with prisoner contact.
- Inspect, plan, and coordinate the installation, repair, and preventative maintenance of refrigeration equipment and HVAC systems.
- Comply with all applicable department policies, procedures, MIOSHA standards, and laws.
- Instruct and supervise skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled prisoners in performing the listed duties.
- Develop material orders and specifications; monitor material inventories.
- Process and monitor work requests and the preventative maintenance database.
- Perform duties within the secure perimeter of the facility and with prisoner contact.

- Refrigeration Mechanic 7:
No specific type or amount required. - Refrigeration Mechanic 8:
Two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in HVAC or refrigeration mechanic trade (e.g., heating and cooling, hydronic heating, refrigeration cooling, mechanical contractor or inspector). - Refrigeration Mechanic E9:
Four years of experience in the HVAC or refrigeration mechanic trade, including one year equivalent to a Refrigeration Mechanic 8. - Refrigeration Mechanic 10:
Five years of experience in the HVAC or refrigeration mechanic trade, including one year equivalent to a Refrigeration Mechanic E9.
Education and Experience
- Refrigeration Mechanic 8-10:
Completion of a vocational training program in refrigeration mechanics that includes commercial or industrial level instruction may be substituted for two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers.

- Some positions require possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the Secretary of State per Public Act 346 of 1988.
- Some positions may involve maintenance, service, repair, or disposal duties that could release refrigerants; certification under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act of 1990 is required.
The Department of Corrections may screen out applicants convicted of a felony under Public Act 191 of 2017. Applicants convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible until satisfactory completion of any sentence, including parole or probation. All employees must meet high ethical standards, report potential conflicts of interest, and review the Ethical Standards and Conduct information.

New Employee TrainingNew hires and returning MDOC employees after more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET): 40 or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on offender contact level and job classification, plus additional online training.
Additional NotesSome positions require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), and others may require a Section 608 certification. The Department of Corrections will not hire individuals convicted of a felony or with pending felony charges per Public Act 140 of 1996.
