This position is a full‑time Correctional Licensed Vocational Nurse (Levels I or II) at the county jail. Work schedule is 10 hours daily Friday through Monday.

Definition

Under the general direction of the Correctional Nurse (RN) or physician, the LNVN provides nursing services within the jail facility and juvenile hall essential to the prevention of disease and disability, health promotion and maintenance, and restoration of personal health within the scope of Title 15 and related regulations.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Assists with managing the county jail and juvenile hall medical care program on a 24‑hour basis, including sick call, specialized or general nursing in various areas, and coordination of clinic supplies and inmate medications.

Reporting Structure

Reports to the Director of Public Health Division, Supervising Correctional Nurse, Public Health Officer/Correctional Physician, or Deputy Director of Public Health.

Level I – Essential Duties
  • Assist the physician and Correctional Nurse with inmate health care, including health assessments and interviews.
  • Administer medications, draw labs, and give injections under supervisory direction.
  • Maintain accurate and complete case documentation and manage inventory of stock medications and supplies.
  • Assist with sick‑call clinics, emergency first aid, triage, and treatment of medical emergencies.
  • Prepare inmate medical transfer packets and coordinate referrals to external agencies.
  • Compile monthly statistical reports and maintain TB testing records as required.
  • Communicate and consult with correctional staff, behavioral health staff, and other facilities.
  • Work required after‑hours “on‑call” shifts as assigned.
Level II – Essential Duties
  • Assists the physician/psychiatrist and Supervising Correctional Nurse with inmate health care, performing many of the same functions as Level I.
  • Provides specialized or general nursing in a variety of settings, consistent with correctional assignment.
  • Manages sick‑call operations and maintains inventory of clinic supplies, including controlled substances.
  • Performs routine and standardized lab testing, draws blood, gives injections, and administers oral, intramuscular, and subcutaneous medications.
  • Assists with emergency first aid, triage, and treatment of medical emergencies and maintains accurate medical records.
  • Coordinates referrals to outside agencies for follow‑up treatments and prepares inmate medical transfer packets.
  • Engages in continuous communication with correctional staff and other agencies; compiles monthly statistical reports.
  • Works shift schedules that may involve night, weekend, and holiday work in a 24‑hour, seven‑day operation; reports to be on‑call as required.
